"Brent Collier was my connection with Buckeye State Roofing. He was excellent to work with and helped me submit an insurance claim which paid for a good part of the roof repairs. Brent was very professional in getting me a quote, helping to manage the insurance claim, scheduling the work and getting it done in a timely fashion. All work was done very well. The clean up after the job was excellent. If I ever need roofing work again, I will not hesitate to contact Brent. I was very satisfied with this re-roofing experience."

"We had Home Exteriors put on a new roof and side our home. Garry was great during the estimate process, explaining the work to be done and explaining the cost. Both siding and roofing projects went smoothly, and we are very happy with the work - professional and of high quality. When it came time to pay, there were no surprises. Overall a great experience."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Chimney caps have a solid top but perforated sides so smoke can exit safely. If rain or snow falls downward, chimney caps can protect the chimney’s interior. Just note that if rain or snow blows in sideways, there’s a higher likelihood it will enter the chimney—but it's not often a cause for concern as long as you have a cap.

You can damage your shingles if you use the wrong type of paint on them. You should always use acrylic latex paint specifically formulated for shingles. Other types of paint may trap moisture, which can cause bigger problems like rot and mildew. Considering that roof replacement costs $9,100 on average, it’s definitely best to avoid making this mistake.

Besides using the right paint, remember that painting your shingles will require increased maintenance.

The short answer is, yes, cedar shakes do last longer than asphalt shingles. But the long answer is, it depends on maintenance. Asphalt shingles last about 20 years, while cedar shingles typically last about 30 years with proper maintenance. If they are very well maintained and installed in an area with a mild, drier climate, they can last up to 50 years.

If you choose tile for your roof, take the time to hire a true tile professional. Look at trusted online review sites to find a top-rated roofing contractor. This helps you zero in on great contractors while avoiding ones who bait and switch you with fluctuating bids.

After you’ve narrowed down a few great candidates with reasonable bids, there are some important questions to ask roofers before you hire. Be sure they are licensed, bonded, and insured before signing a contract. Once you find a roofer who checks off all your boxes, you’re ready to get your project started.

No, you should not close or cover your gable vents in the winter. While it might seem logical to block cold air, heating your home creates hot air that rises and can cause condensation in the attic. If the vents are covered, this moisture becomes trapped, creating an ideal environment for mold and mildew. Keeping the gable vents open ensures proper ventilation, which helps dry out the attic, maintain even temperatures, and prevent moisture-related damage.
