"I dealt with Tim for the price and project details and then Jeff was the man who came out to do the job. The deck had previously been done by a guy who did not know what he was doing so Jeff power washed the entire deck and let it dry for 24 hours, then he sanded the deck and scrubbed it down with denatured alcohol to help remove any remaining paint from before. When the deck was dry, Jeff taped off everything and proceeded to edge everything before he rolled a nice thick layer of paint on the deck. We waited another 24 hours and Jeff returned to apply a nice second coat of paint on the entire deck. Tim and Jeff are very easy to work with and I will most certainly come back to them for future projects."

Small jobs welcome

"We cannot say enough good things about our experience with Holtzman Handyman. Brant was very quick to get back to me and give me a quote for my kitchen tile project. He was very knowledgeable and thorough to make sure I bought enough tile, grout, caulk and bullnose pieces. Brant called me beforehand to let me know his ETA ( so I could secure my dogs). He did a great job in installing our kitchen tile and he was on time, professional and friendly. Brant also suggested that we get our electrician to change the position of our outlet so the stove would fit properly against the tile. Not many people would take that extra step to ensure the best look for our new kitchen. We would wholeheartedly recommend Holtzman Handyman to any of our friends and family."

They took the time to prepare the space properly and made sure every tile was perfectly aligned and securely placed. The craftsmanship really stands out?the floors look clean, modern, and have completely elevated the appearance of our store. "I had the entire upstairs of my tri-level carpeted. The installers were on time, very nice, and efficient. They were also respectful of our home, moved the large furniture items, returned everything, and cleaned up from their work very well. This is the fourth time that I've used Empire and would recommend them to anyone looking for flooring."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

The rule tells you how to cut tile to install it in a corner. The 3/4/5 rule recommends that you should have 3 feet across on one straight line, four feet on the other perpendicular line, and 5 feet of length from the end of one of the lines to the other. You’re making a right triangle with the tile, and the hypotenuse (the line across from where the 3-foot lie and 4-foot line meet) should be 5 feet long.

To make a bathroom look bigger, choose light-colored, medium- to large-format tiles. Light colors such as white, cream, or light gray make a space feel more open, while dark colors, busy patterns, and small tiles can make a bathroom feel smaller. It may seem counterintuitive, but small tiles can shrink a room visually due to the increased number of grout lines. Using medium- to large-format tiles creates a more seamless look. For the best effect, pair your light-colored tiles with a matching or similarly colored grout. This minimizes the grid-like pattern and gives the floor and walls a more continuous, uninterrupted appearance, helping the room feel significantly larger.

Yes. You can tile over tile if the old tile is in good shape, but this will also create a thicker floor. As a result, you may have to remove and readjust baseboards and other room trimmings and potentially even raise door heights to work with the higher floors. In most projects, it’s best to remove the old tile before installing a new tile floor.

The lifespan of tile flooring can vary significantly based on the material and maintenance. Generally, tile flooring can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years, but high-quality, well-maintained ceramic tile can last 75 to 100 years. To achieve a longer lifespan, you should clean the tiles and grout regularly, reseal the grout annually, keep the floor dry, and avoid placing extremely heavy items on it to prevent cracking. Choosing a high-quality tile (Grade 1) will also contribute to its longevity.

Yes, it would be best if you waterproofed your shower walls before tiling. The cement backing board behind the tile is not waterproof; it’s only water-resistant. On top of your tile backing board, be sure to use a waterproof shower membrane before you start installing your shower tiles.
