"Ed has an incredible work ethic. I appreciated his knowledge and experience when it came to thoroughly cleaning and staining a huge deck that wraps around the back of my home. When he was finished it looked like a brand new deck. I will hire Ed again and I highly recommend him."

"Will is respectful, polite and listens to what you want done. My yard has a lot of fill dirt with some large rocks so it made it challanging. He also offered me some advice on how to clean the algae off my house which worked perfectly. Very happy with the deck."

"Handyman Matters did a great job of repairing very large hole in finished basement drywall including painting to match existing color.  Also installed vanity / sink / light fixture / mirror / baseboard / towel racks in bathroom plus painting the room.  Looks great, price was reasonable, and quality of work was very high.  The company was very efficient in producing quotes and meeting the promised schedule.

"This job was the result of a special offering.  My experience with other providers is that they come in and do what is minimally required and leave.  This was not the case with Affordable Painting.

They were punctual.  There was some confusions on who was to supply the paint and they had to go out to purchase it.  They made up the time they were gone.  They were thorough and professional.  They voluntarily sanded doors that were fought, which made a world of difference.  The workers never slacked off and made good use of their time.  The walked through everything with me to guarantee satisfaction.  They also cleaned up thoroughly.  I would use them again and highly recommend them."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.

PVC decking tends to be cooler than composite because the material is less dense and absorbs less heat. However, it depends on the deck’s color. A dark-colored PVC deck may run hotter than a light-colored composite deck. If you’re concerned about your deck getting too hot, it’s best to stick to a light color such as beige or gray.
