"I had an excellent experience recently with Deck & Fence Renewal Systems. Brian and Jeremy removed 7 rotted 4x4 fence posts as well as the 2 foot deep concrete plugs in record time. The new posts were installed in the exact same location/height and were perfectly level. They also did a great cleanup and hauled away all the debris. I'll be using this company again for any of my fencing projects!"

Small jobs welcome

"Ed has an incredible work ethic. I appreciated his knowledge and experience when it came to thoroughly cleaning and staining a huge deck that wraps around the back of my home. When he was finished it looked like a brand new deck. I will hire Ed again and I highly recommend him."

"Mike and Jim did an outstanding job leveling, reinforcing and and structurally improving my mother's deck. They made certain that my 90 year old mother could safely navigate outdoors on the deck which is her very favorite place to be! I am beyond satisfied with this finished Deck repair project by Mike and Jim of Tri-state Home Repair & Maintenance. They have exceeded all our expectations!"

"They did amazing. They made sure they cleaned up their mess. I have hired other companies in the past and they have left a mess. My deck is power washed, new stain and new lighting ran and all flower beds are nice. Very please with them and will call them back for any other projects."

"He assigned two people for this job.  It was far more difficult than anyone thought to remove the wallpaper -- it took almost 2 days and was incredibly messy, although they did their best to clean up after each day.  Our entire house was covered with dust. Mr. Jent was ill and only showed up one time during the entire job.  The workers were very professional, arrived on time every day and worked (except for lunch) continuously until 5 pm.  I was impressed. They cleaned up some before they left each day, but the entire house was still covered in dust until they finished.  They did put plastic over the furniture, but . . . .    Also, the workers took down the window coverings, but I had to specifically ask them to put them back up when they were finished.  I think things would've gone better if the owner had been around more often, but maybe I'm wrong.  In addition, he was supposed to add a shelf in the kitchen, but didn't do it (I didn't pay for it).  Basically, after all of the great reviews, I guess I was disappointed.  After we finished cleaning up, etc. we were very satisfied with the work they did do.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.

While experienced DIYers may take on the challenge, hiring a licensed professional is often the best route, especially for larger or elevated structures. A local deck contractor is typically the best pro for the job, as they have specialized experience and are knowledgeable about local building codes, ensuring your deck is built safely and designed to last. Other professionals who can build a deck include general contractors and carpenters, who may be more readily available in some regions.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

Space deck handrail posts four to six feet apart. If the posts are more than six feet apart, the railing will be less able to withstand lateral forces and is more susceptible to breaking. Additionally, railing posts that are more than six feet apart may not be up to code, and you may face fines and be required to reinstall the posts to bring them up to code.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.
