Before applying paint to exterior surfaces, filling any cracks or gaps with caulk is essential. Sealing them with a combination of caulk and paint prevents moisture from damaging the paint or decaying the underlying material. You want to ensure the caulk you purchase can be painted over or that you opt for a caulk the same color as the paint.

If you buy new cedar, the process of cutting it usually roughs up the surface enough that it doesn’t require sanding. Apply a dose of the fungicide to the siding and leave to work according to the instructions, usually for an hour or two. Then wash it thoroughly away and scrub the spot again. Repeat the process if necessary. If nothing is removing the mildew stains, you should plan on removing those clapboard planks in time, as their damage could cause future problems.

For the materials alone, a square of siding costs an average of $600, but prices can range from $100 to $3,000, depending on the material. Vinyl siding costs toward the lower end of that range, while real brick or stone siding costs closer to the higher end. Keep in mind that many boxes of siding contain two squares, enough to cover 200 square feet, so you may need to double your cost if you only need one square.
