"It was great. Josh Betts returned my call first thing the next morning, and he was at the property quickly (and on a Sunday). Josh was right on time for the walk-through with our contractor. We had the repair plans the following afternoon. Josh is clearly very knowledgeable. I would recommend Betts Structural with absolutely no hesitation."

"We called three different structural engineers/engineering firms and the Allison Structural Group responded within hours. We needed a fairly quick turnaround on a roof ridge reinforcement. Project was completed within a few days and the recommendations and final write-up upon project completion. was very professional. Great customer service and easy to deal with. Highly recommend."

"Mike and his team hooked up a 40’ gas line from a house gas meter to fire pit. His team was responsive and did the work to my satisfaction. They also were able to recess the key valve into my fire pit brick to keep aesthetics to my liking. That recessing was a change to the original agreed work and required an 12” key to turn the valve. Since it was a change Mike didn’t have one but got in his truck and went to two or three different places to try and find one the day of install so that I could have a party that evening. It really showed he cared about his client. I would recommend him for any construction needs you have."

"Ultimately, he simply plugged our kitchen dimensions into a software package and tried to sell us on new cabinets.  We were looking more for someone to be innovative in discussing our kitchen remodel with us.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Building codes for spiral staircases will vary by your location. Most local codes will specify minimum tread width, riser height, handrail requirements, and headroom. These standards help ensure safety and accessibility for all users. Always check local codes before you begin the installation to ensure compliance and avoid costly modifications or fines.

It depends on the bank and the extent of the issue. Some banks will lend against homes with minor foundation damage, but most won’t if the issue is structural since the home acts as collateral for the mortgage. Banks that offer renovation loans might still finance a home with structural problems. More minor issues like settling cracks and intermittent problems with humidity are unlikely to stop a bank from financing.

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

Structural engineers are necessary for projects involving alterations to load-bearing structures, foundation work, and compliance with safety standards. This includes home expansions, retaining walls, and significant repairs that impact a property's integrity.
