"I strongly caution anyone considering doing business with this company. I gave them a deposit of $4,428.65, and when I canceled a week later they kept almost $900 of it even though my service was not for another 6 weeks. You do sign a very simple, clearly stated document that says, “Should you cancel beyond three business days, you understand your deposit is non-refundable. Northern Basements may choose to refund depending on cancellation circumstances.” I fully acknowledge that I canceled a few days outside that window, but I hoped an honest company that cares about customers and referrals would choose to provide a full refund. I am a sucker for hoping that. They chose to risk my impression, referral and review for $885.53. If nothing else comes out of this, I hope everyone reading at least goes in knowing that this statement on their contract is a real threat and your deposit is hostage. Even Airbnb’s offer full refunds on deposits within just a few days of people’s arrival date. 3 days to cancel with service not scheduled for 6 weeks out, “C’mon man.” No materials were used. No service workers’ time was taken. The manager justified the 20% withholding as credit card fees, restocking fees, time and resources for the estimate, and administrative fees. I wholly accepted responsibility for the credit card fees and time of Paul, the gentleman who performed the assessment, and I offered to settle at 10%. I still believe any reputable company would have provided a full refund at this point in a project, or at most deduct the credit card fees, because nothing more went into this beyond what would have normally been a free estimate. The further arguments the manager made for the additional fees were the scheduling of their team and allocation of materials for my project. Complete nonsense, especially when the project was not set for 6 weeks away. Because they had my deposit hostage, they had control of how much they decided they wanted to keep, it was completely arbitrary, and they kept almost $900 of my money without providing anything. If they wanted to cover their credit card transaction fees, fine, at most 6%, but the rest is absolute robbery. The only solace I can find in this loss of almost $900 now is that I didn’t spend another $13,000 with them. I tried to call Paul after speaking with the manager to ask if he could do me a favor and try to reason with the manager on my behalf because he seemed like a nice enough guy. No answer. No call back. I will never seek out this company’s services again and I will actively discourage others from doing so but, based on my experience, I expect they really don’t care."

"It was a complex project. They were very careful with their procedures and raised sunken concrete sections next to the house and around a pool to allow for drainage. They filled the major cracks. They were courteous and on-time over several days. After many years the water in the basement problem has been resolved."

Reliable employee's, sub contract for plumbing and electrical. Fully Insured

"I hired Greg to excavate and waterproof our new 8' tall finished basement. A different contractor did the concrete work. Greg assumed responsibility of all work after the concrete was cured. He said he would acquire and install drainage pipe and fabric around the footings. He said he would apply tar for waterproofing. And he coordinated acquiring stone and sand for back-fill. However, after he back-filled the foundation, I brought to his attention that he didn't apply the waterproofing tar. When I first asked him about not doing the waterproofing tar, he said he called his "guy" to do it and expressed frustration that it didn't get done. A couple days later he changed his message and said I never asked for waterproofing to be done. Then he changed his message again and said he gave me the phone number to his "guy" for me to call and coordinate the waterproofing. In the end, he was certain it was my fault for not coordinating with his "guy" to do the waterproofing. By all accounts, waterproofing is essential because our home is on a lake and has water issues that need to be mitigated. He wanted to charge us for the additional work to re-excavate even though he didn't get it right the first time. We shared harsh words and now I have a foundation that will leak like cheesecloth. It was quite fascinating how many excuses he surmised for why it didn't get done; none of which included that perhaps he made a mistake. I was quite pleased with his work until he blamed me for not doing that one particular thing. Seriously, dude? It was my fault? I understand that mistakes happen, I wish he were mature enough to take responsibility. Don't hire children to do a man's job."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, the air from a damp basement can travel up into your living area through a process called the stack effect, so moisture, mold spores, and other debris in your basement air can all decrease your indoor air quality on your main floors. Additionally, damp basements can promote the rotting of building materials, which can damage flooring, insulation, and framing on your first floor in addition to materials in the basement.

Thankfully, you do have a few sump pump backup options in case it fails. One option is a battery-powered backup sump pump. Another option is using a portable backup generator as a power supply for your sump pump. Unlike a battery-powered backup which has limited power, a generator can run around the clock for as long as you need it.

Or you can opt for a water-powered backup pump, which uses your home’s water supply as a source of power. However, this may not be the best option if you find your house frequently has low water pressure.

Yes, cleaning a crawl space is worth it. You might think you can ignore the area since it’s out of sight, but doing so can lead to pest infestations, mold, and other problems. Crawl space cleaning costs between $0.50 and $4 per square foot, but the cost to deal with pests or mold would be much higher.

Yes, basement insulation needs a vapor barrier due to its susceptibility to moisture seeping in from the outside of the house. You should install a moisture barrier before you install insulation or purchase insulation that comes prebuilt with a moisture barrier to avoid water damage in your insulation and costly mold and water remediation expenses.

To ensure your basement walls are waterproof, it's crucial to address any existing moisture issues before finishing. Inspect for signs of water seepage, such as dampness or discoloration, and repair any leaks or cracks. Install a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from penetrating the walls, and consider waterproofing paints or coatings.

Proper drainage systems, such as interior or exterior waterproofing, can also be beneficial.
