Customers say: Quality work

"We had a very pleasant experience with Kevin & Ric from Herington Painting. They were prompt, courteous, and in constant communication with me during the entire time they were on the job. They did a great job staining the exterior of our house and took special care to cover our deck, awning and landscaping to protect them from any paint drips. We are very happy with the quality of their work and would recommend them to anyone in need of painting services."

Warranties offered

"Overall, this was a great experience. M&K Custom Painting showed up ready to work! When the job was completed they offered to return if I found anything that may need touching up. I found out that this offer was genuine and not a gimmick. I had some stains show up through the paint after it dried. I brought this to M&K's attention and they came back to touch the area up. Thanks M&K for a job well done!!!"

"Steve does excellent work. He completed work a contractor never came back to finish ( laying flooring) and fixed areas the contractor didn’t do well. Looks awesome! He put up 2 ceiling lights. He reconnected the dryer vent. Previously he installed 2 bathroom vanities and built a base so the vanities are high enough for a tall person. He’s replaced all the boards on the deck Looks fantastic. Put all new laminate floors in the kitchen, hallway and laundry room. He’s put up shelving units in the basement Anything that needs doing, large or small, Steve does extremely well. He will be returning to paint the bathrooms, replace more ceiling lights, and power wash and paint the deck. He completes work in a timely manor, he’s reliable and charges fair prices for his work. He is my go to guy for anything that needs to be done and done well. I’ve recommended him to family and friends. They have all been very pleased with his work. I highly recommend Steve."

Painting questions, answered by experts

If your cedar fence is new, don’t delay. Unlike treated pine, you don’t need to wait months for the wood to dry out for it to accept stain. With cedar, the sooner, the better. Seal cedar within two weeks of installation to prevent the sun from fading its red color.

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

An exterior paint job typically lasts between 5 and 10 years, though this can range from 3 to 17 years depending on several factors. The longevity is influenced by the quality of the paint and primer, the quality of the application, the local climate, and the type of surface being painted. For example, paint on wood siding may need to be redone every 3 to 7 years, while painted brick can last up to 17 years. Aluminum siding often needs repainting every 5 years.

You should stain both sides of your fence to get the full benefits. Fences often fall along property lines, so you may want to save a buck by leaving your neighbor’s side in the dust. If you do that, all you get is a slightly better view. Moisture and UV rays can still sneak in through the side that’s unpainted or worn down and damage your fence. Rot and rust will spread, even if you can’t see it from your side of the lawn.
