Technically, mineral spirits are a type of paint thinner, so they can be used for the same purposes. In most cases, pure mineral spirits are preferable to other paint thinners. Still, if necessary, you can successfully use paint thinners for most of the same applications, such as thinning or cleaning oil paints.

Professional painters often use microfiber rollers since they hold more paint and allow the pros to cover a bigger surface area without having to stop frequently to reload the roller with more paint. Painters also use extension poles for a wider reach from one position, giving them more coverage with less moving around.

You can paint over existing wallpaper if you select wallpaper that is designed to be paintable. This type of paper is meant to add texture to walls. Alternatively, if you have old wallpaper you’d like to cover up, you can often paint over that instead of removing it. However, it needs to be smooth, damage-free, and non-textured. If, on the other hand, you don’t want any level of shine at all, consider opting for a flat paint or another similarly sheenless alternative like matte. 

You'll need at least two coats of paint when painting your stair railings, despite some manufacturers' claims of single-coat coverage. This is necessary mostly because there are often many corners and details that make it difficult to cover all surfaces evenly with a single coat. Adding a second coat evens out the finish and provides added durability.
