"I approached several contractors for quotes to repair the deck with very slow response times. Jeff responded very quickly, visited the site and generated a quote. He also suggested some different approaches to comply with HOA requirements. Jeff generated the variance paperwork to the HOA. Great job. I would recommend Cactus for any type of work."

Customers say: Quick response

"I recently hired Scalia Development to repair my deck and I must say, their service was truly amazing. From start to finish, Scalia Development demonstrated exceptional customer service skills that left a lasting impression on me. Scalia Development was always attentive and responsive I was highly impressed with the competitive pricing they offered. Scalia Development provided a quote that not only met my budget but exceeded my expectations in terms of value for money. Their ability to provide top-notch service at such a reasonable cost truly sets them apart from other contractors I've worked with in the past. While I would have loved the opportunity to personally meet and thank Bob and his crew, unfortunately, my hectic work schedule prevented this. Nevertheless, I appreciate the dedication and hard work they put into ensuring the success of my deck repair project. I am incredibly satisfied. Thank you, Scalia Development, for a job well done!"

"It was a large roof ice jam, fortunately Trevor was a little early. It was a tough job but it was well done. He removed the ice and repaired the soffit that the ice damaged. Well done at a fair price. Would definitely recommend him to others."

"He always answered my calls or would return them immediately. He went out of his way to do the best work and even did a little extra out of the kindness of his heart. He also made me a porch along with stairs for my deck. Definitely a 5 stars!"

Small jobs welcome

"So happy we chose R&D for our exterior wall repairs! they were great to work with throughout the process of what turned out to be a complicated issue. Their communication was really appreciated as they dug into things and problem solved some unique issues with how the previous home owners had cut corners on the house. R&D wasn’t the cheapest initial bid we received but I have no doubt that we would have wound up paying more in the end for a lower quality result with anyone else. Thanks guys!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

You can nail or screw composite decking, but 3-inch decking screws are the better fastener choice. Unlike nails, decking screws won’t back out of the composite material over time. There’s also little danger of splitting composite material when driving screws, so you don’t need to pre-drill holes unless otherwise recommended by your decking manufacturer.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.
