"Our driveway was paved about 2 years ago. Since then we've seen sinking in a couple places from a couple hours of a truck being parked on it and cracking along the bottom slopped edge. We were told initially that it took 2 years to fully harden. When we called in to complain about the above, we were then told it took 3 years to harden. No underlay was used. The contract did say they would use it if deemed necessary. I asked the foreman at the time of the work and he said it was not needed. I regret not insisting on it. I wish I knew more then than I do now. But for a more robust asphalt it should be done in two layers. They use one layer and, as stated before, no underlay. I regret believing that they used "road grade" paving as I was told. When talking to the owner the last time, he was more concerned with defending his work than with figuring out how to fix the issues. Recommend researching more how asphalt should be laid than I initially did. I suspect we'll need a resurfacing in a few years."

The best tool to cut pavers is a hammer and chisel. These tools are best for inexperienced DIYers, as they're affordable and don't require special skills. If you're comfortable using power tools, an angle grinder or a circular saw with a masonry cutting wheel will make quick work of your paver cutting project.

A traditional driveway gate isn’t your only option when installing a barricade in front of your driveway. A security gate like a swing gate, double swing gate, bi-folding gate, vertical gate, or pivot gate could work just as well as your driveway gate—if not better for your home depending on which qualities you’re after. Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

Whether you should resurface or replace your asphalt driveway heavily depends on its condition. If the foundation is solid and the damage is minor, resurfacing is your best bet because it’s more affordable and faster than replacing the driveway. But if your driveway has foundational problems and/or severe damage, like large, deep cracks and potholes, then it makes more sense to replace it.
