Small jobs welcome

"I couldn't have expected a better service, and that's after using several engineers in the tri-state for past work. This engineer also goes above and beyond. He is meticulous, honest and very responsive. He was truly a pleasure to deal with. I will absolutely be using him again, and I wholeheartedly recommend him.

"Jade Kitchens designed and remodeled my kitchen and installed the flooring in the rest of my living areas. They were professional, kept on budget and schedule and helped me visualize my new space by designing it on the computer. The products I bought from them were top quality. "The construction company, MGT Construction has just completed our +/-600 sq foot deck at our home in Southold. MGT managed the planning: We were determined to build the deck per Southold Town code using Timber-Tech composite decking and railings per their specifications. After we had the survey done Steven coordinated with their architect and liaised all building inspections. He was instrumental in all follow-ups with the town until final approval of the permit. We sourced the pressure-treated framing lumber from Amagansett Lumber and with four feet deep footings the underlying structure is solid and constructed to last 30 years, which is also the guaranteed life of the decking. MGT Construction excels in the carpentry aspect of the decking. They made sure the planks were correctly aligned and the surrounding picture frame planks were precisely fitted. This was also true as well regarding the fitting of the railings. We opted for “drink rails” and their finishing on those is superb. Our overall impression of the construction staff was that they were always courteous and friendly. We did however make the observation that the workers should pay attention to their attire, which at times was needlessly sloppy and awkward. However, they were hard workers and respectful. An electrical subcontractor had to redo work because a supervisor was not on the site. The work was corrected and promptly made without complaint. Cleanup was done in a timely manner and to our satisfaction. Having had other construction work done on homes I can honestly say, MGT Carpentry was professional and their work was excellent. I highly recommend them."

Architects questions, answered by experts

British architect John Nash is credited with creating the Italianate style of architecture. The style was further popularized in the U.S. by landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing and architect Calvert Vaux. The style spread across the U.S. due to Downing’s popular book on the style and the availability of plans and materials due to the mass production of the Industrial Revolution.

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.

A cathedral ceiling is a type of vaulted ceiling with a symmetrical peak that follows the pitch of the roof. They typically peak at a height of 12 to 20 feet, although they can go higher. This dramatic height and steep peak mimic the architecture of many historic cathedrals, which is where they got their name.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

You can draw your own house plans using three-dimensional modeling software, but in most cases, you’ll need an architect to draw up the final plans. Architects understand local building regulations and requirements, so their plans will be necessary for getting permits approved, and they’ll also ensure your home is structurally sound. DIY house plans can be a good place to start to help visualize your project, but you should always defer to a professional before trying to proceed with the project.
