"I called Steve the Handy Hubby on a Thursday with a somewhat of an emergency. The entry deck to the side entance of my rental home had rotted wood and needed repair pretty quick for safety reasons. Steve came and looked at it the same day, gave me an excellent price and came back the next day to do the job. Couldn't ask for anything more. Great experience!"

"Preferred Choice Cleaning is outstanding. This is the second time I utilized Preferred and Brendan and Brandon did a phenomenal job: porch, pavers/slate, extensive PVC fencing around the property, shed, deck, patio furniture etc. Looks brand new! Professional, courteous, and the cost was very reasonable. On top of all this, a little while after the job was done, Angelo the owner called to ask how everything went. I highly recommend Preferred Choice…a company that knows quality and service."

"They did a wonderful job.  There was mold on the vinyl railing and the man was on his hand knees forever making sure he got every last bit of it removed.  They were extremely thorough and hard working.  I would definitely recommend them and use them again."

"Stephen and his team are outstanding.  My wife and I are extremely discerning customers, and after meeting with four of the top rated deck builders on Angie's List we elected to proceed with Stephen after reviewing his portfolio and viewing some of his previous projects documented on the Internet.  He was also one of the few deck builders that had experience with and was comfortable installing curved railing and deck boards.  When we met with Stephen, we were immediately impressed with his professionalism, his creative vision, his suggestions, and his ability to take our ideas and make them a reality.  Before finalizing our plans, we had many questions and Stephen answered each and every one of them in a timely manner.  He was very easy to work with, and simplified what initially seemed to be an overwhelming decision-making process.

Over the course of eight days Stephen and his crew constructed our dream deck.  Stephen was on the project site every day with his team until the job was complete.  They were reliable, punctual, and their work ethic was impressive; they began work routinely by 7:30 A.M. and would often work until 6:30 P.M.  The quality of their craftsmanship is top notch, and the finished product exceeded our expectations.  It looks just as nice as the decks we admired in the deck brochures when selecting our materials.  Stephen and his team are talented carpenters. Their attention to detail was apparent as they measured and remeasured before making each cut.  Although we had to adhere to set plans regarding the deck's size and dimensions, Stephen incorporated several subtle changes that made the deck more aesthetically appealing and functional as well.  When we decided to proceed with Easy Decks they were booked for a month or so in advance, but they were well worth the wait, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone in need of a new deck. "

"Everything went well. However, the initial estimate did not cover the full deck, and I was asked to pay more. I authorized additional amount after I was told that there was not enough penofin oil for the entire deck. After work was resumed, I was told again that I would need to pay more for addition penofin oil again. I said, No! Despite my refusal to make the second additional payment, all work was completed professionally. I would hire again provided the initial estimate is accurate."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Yes, you can attach a deck to a mobile home, but it’s important that the work be done correctly to avoid the potential for major damage to your home. Many building codes require that any additions to mobile homes—including decks—be either freestanding or have their own support structures. Getting permits may require submitting the home's original floor plan, the proposed floor plan, framing details, and more.

Increases livable area and enhances aesthetic, often boosting property appeal.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.
