"Hired Anthony Catanzareti (DBA ExactFit) of Scriba, NY for a major, five month house renovation in November, 2017 paying 30% up front. Contractor showed up the first few weeks, did the demo, including removing the roof and siding, asked for second 30% draw after 1 month (which we paid), claiming the need to buy materials, contractor then went dormant for two months, while the house was exposed to weather and getting soaked. We begged Anthony to get the roof done for 2 1/2 months in order to stop water penetration and subsequent damage, he claimed a shortage of money to buy materials, even though we had already paid well ahead and he could not account for already committed funds. In desperation, we paid him a third, partial draw to hire a sub do the roof, Anthony never hired a sub, and instead disappeared for two weeks while he took his family to Disney World. When he returned, he worked apathetically (2-3 hour days) for 6 weeks on the roof that was never completed (should be a 1 week job). We also paid him additional money for windows in February of 2018 for the house ($12,000), which he lied about having ordered, has never delivered, and refuses to refund with no reason given. The window losses were in addition to the $100,000 we paid him for home renovation on a $134,000 contract, where Anthony did at most $20,000 in labor/materials, leaving us with a loss of approximately $80,000. This is not accounting additional damages from not drying in the site, which exceed $20,000. In Summary: Anthony took the money for windows ($12k), never delivered them, no refund. Anthony was paid $100K dollars for a home renovation, of which he did at most $20,000 in work, ruined our house (uninhabitable), refuses to account for missing funds and hasn't refunded any money to date (6/2018)."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Just like when you’re shingling a roof, you can install felt underlayment under a metal roof, but a synthetic underlayment like adhered ice and water shield is the best option. These use adhesives rather than mechanical fasteners, so you have fewer penetrations going through your roof deck and a lower risk of leaks. Ice and water shield is also easier to install because you don’t need additional tools or fasteners to attach it to the roof deck.

Your tile roof's life expectancy ranges from 40 years to over 100, depending on which type you have and how well you maintain it by keeping it clean and free of debris. Clay, terracotta, and slate roofs often exceed the 100-year mark, while metal and composite versions can last over 50 years.

A roof replacement will usually include removal of your old roof, shingle replacement, and a new roof underlayment, but it may only include adding new shingles if you’re layering new shingles over the old shingles. If you have signs of roof leaks or your roofer finds water damage to the roof decking underneath your old roof, it can also include replacement of the OSB or plywood decking that lays over your rafters and supports the roofing material above.

If your roof has storm damage, there will be some telltale signs. These include missing, loose, or damaged shingles. You may notice cracks or dents on the metal parts of your roof, like flashing, gutters, or metal panels. Water leaks are another big indicator. So are visible signs of impact. Rather than climb up on your roof to check, hire a professional to inspect the area  safely.

You can secure roof decorations like inflatables and other Christmas decor by tying a rope or attacking bungee cords to your roof clips. Depending on the pitch of your roof, you can use sandbags for extra support. Like with Christmas lights, avoid using staples or duct tape.
