"Hired Greg for a full gut and remodel of a bathroom. Greg was very competent, personable, and took the time to understand exactly what we wanted. He made us feel like we were in good hands. He took the time to make sure things were done the right way. The result was top notch, couldn't have asked for more. I would definitely use this company again!"

"Good communication thru text and he did everything the way I would have done it. He immediately realized the existing poor workmanship and corrected the issue using proper materials and working when weather was in the teens! Sent me pictures documenting his work as he went along."

Small jobs welcome

"Called and gave a scope of the work and was given a quote which I accepted. The guys showed up at exactly 8am as promised. Placed tarps in the work area and out to the front door. Proceeded to do the work removing old stairs and framing out the ceiling. Installed new stairs in place. Kept me appraised as to their progress. Completed the job on time. Cleaned up the work area. Happy with the way the job went. Would higher again."

"John Starkie and his crew were awesome! John has a great eye and vision and is meticulous with the work that him and his crew perform. He's not the cheapest guy around, but you absolutely get what you pay for. He handled ever aspect of the job from drawings to pavers to driveway to picking plants. He contacted us and gave us multiple updates daily and was a pleasure to work with. You can tell that him and his crew have been doing this a long time. No delays, no issues and the job came out perfect. Was also done on time within the time frame that John stated up front. He will be my "go to" guy for any other work needed."

"I called and they responded immediately.. Came out to house and gave a reasonable estimate for job.. I hired them and they had the job done in two days, workers were nice and friendly. They matched my siding and you can not even tell where the new siding was installed. Very happy with the job they did, decided to get to do my gutters also, and get a estimate for them to paint and seal my new deck. Patricia P"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.
