Not usually. Laminates are made from plastic materials, traditionally melamine, so they don’t offer any eco-friendly or green benefits. Melamine itself is infamous for its toxic composition and outgassing over time, so if you’re looking for a green counter option, it’s best to avoid laminates. Formica® is actually the brand name of the laminate countertops that they produce. As such, there is no difference between Formica® versus laminate other than laminate is the generic name for layers of paper topped with an image layer that have been compressed under high pressure to form a solid, easy-to-maintain countertop. Other companies that produce laminate countertops include WilsonArt® and Arborite®, among others.

Laminate countertops are great for bringing your kitchen countertop ideas on a budget to life, but they can become damaged and dull after years of use. To make laminate countertops look new again, you can use a laminate refinishing kit to fill in nicks and scratches and polish them to restore their original look. You can also paint laminate countertops to give them a new look.

You should always seal cut countertops to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. The right way to seal countertops depends on the type of material. For laminate and wood, apply epoxy or other specialty sealers by pouring it onto the countertop and letting it flow across the whole surface to the edges, guiding it with a paint stick or putty knife. You will need to move quickly so that it does not dry or harden before you are done. For stone countertops, use a sealant specially manufactured for your type of stone and apply it according to manufacturer directions. 

You can likely use spray paint or a paint sprayer for your laminate countertops. You should prep the space the same way as if you were painting with a roller or brush, making sure to cover any areas that you want to protect with a drop cloth or plastic sheets.
