"I hired Alex Masonry to remove and rebuild a retaining wall that was leaning. After some discussion, I decided to expand the project to include new bluestone caps and to re-do my cracked concrete walkway with pavers. Alex and his crew did an outstanding job. Alex is extremely knowledgeable, personable and a pleasure to work with. His pricing is very reasonable. He and his team did a great job. Hard workers, with great attention to detail. I would highly recommend Alex Masonry!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Dan is personable, friendly and professional. He came on time. When he said he would, and apologized for having to reschedule for 2 days later due to the weather, which of course was not his fault! He did a great job repairing my chimney and cleaned up after himself. The chimney looks great. I will definitely call him the next time I need work done. He also does power washing! I highly recommend Clark Masonry!"

"Great! Anton and his crew are skilled and professional. Anton provided a detailed estimate before starting work and along the way as we added additional tasks, so there were no surprises. His prices are reasonable especially given the quality of the work. He was able to schedule our tasks quickly, which we especially appreciated since we had just recently moved in. Anton was present for the entire project and he and his crew are all very courteous, easy to have around and trustworthy. They cleaned up thoroughly after the job each day. Best of all, Anton and the crew are very good at what they do, and they all take pride in their work to please themselves as well as the customer. Also, Anton crafted a beautiful mantle for our fireplace and built it in his carpentry shop. It looks great and is just what we wanted. We recommend this company highly."

"We had a great experience working with Greenstone Waterproofing. They were professional, reliable, and did an excellent job. The quality of the work was great, they were easy to communicate with, and everything was completed as promised. It’s not always easy to find a contractor you can trust, so we really appreciated how smooth the whole process was. Would definitely recommend them and would happily use them again."

"This project was large at least in my dwelling place. Restructure of the brick work I put in over 15 years ago. I had weeds growing uncontrollably and starting to hurt my plants. Cruger took care of it and even saved some of my favorites. Cruger has shown pride in their work and we’re extremely kind and wanted to do the best they can to achieve it. I am extremely satisfied in the final product. They were very fair in their pricing and were happy to work with your budget. I can’t say so much because I am very pleased. I can’t stop looking at it. It brings a lot of joy and it also gives me an opportunity to add what I feel like adding without a weed issue ever again. Give them a call and you’ll be happy you did."

"George put together our stone patio and fire pit. His team did it all in one day and exactly to our liking. It looks beautiful. The quality of the workmanship is excellent. George also was very patient with us, remarking the location of the fire pit three times because we kept changing our minds. All in all we had a wonderful experience and will be hiring him again!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, brick should be clean before staining to ensure the best results. Dirt, dust, mold, mildew, and other substances on the brick can prevent the stain from properly adhering to it. Thoroughly cleaning the brick allows the stain to penetrate and bond to the surface more effectively. Cleaning typically involves using a pressure washer or a stiff brush with mild detergent. However, stubborn residue may require a specialized masonry cleaner.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

Yes, as long as the cut is clean and the brick remains structurally sound, you can reuse it. Reusing brick is especially common for landscaping, edging, and small masonry repairs. Just make sure to file down any sharp edges before handling or installing it.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Removing paint from brick can have both aesthetic and practical value. Some people prefer the timeless look of bare brick, making it worthwhile to remove old paint layers. Brick also lasts longer when unpainted, as paint traps moisture, causing the brick to deteriorate more quickly. If your brick walls are already in bad shape, stripping the paint off might do more harm than good.
