Although boilers can last 15 to 20 years when maintained properly, you may run into some common problems like oil burners and transformers malfunctioning; cracks in the heat exchanger; clogs in the heating oil pump, burner nozzles, or fuel pipes; loose wiring connections; and damaged valves. Many of these problems can be caught early on during annual maintenance services. You might also have an issue with your fuel source if you have a gas or oil boiler. Make sure your other gas appliances are working or that you have oil in your tank.

Once you know where your bleed valves are and how to use them, bleeding out heaters is a quick process. Expect it to take around 10 to 20 minutes, possibly longer if you have a lot of heaters or are still learning how they work. If you have a central bleed valve on your boiler, the process still takes the same amount of time. Make sure you have any keys necessary to turn the bleed valves on. Without bleed valves, the process should take around three hours.

It is almost always more affordable to repair a radiator than it is to replace one. The average radiator repair cost is around $150, and it’s typically about ten times as expensive—around $1,500—to replace a radiator. A repair usually takes under an hour, too, while a replacement can take several hours, making it less of a time commitment to repair one.

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

Many states don’t have specific license requirements for HVAC repair companies, but your local city or county might. You can check online for local requirements and then Angi’s contractor licensing tool to see if the company you’re considering is licensed. Regardless of licensing, you should ensure your company is fully insured.
