"I called A-ffordable Locksmith to replace the locking mechanisms on my front & back doors. This was not an emergency. Never the less, Dan came over for a quote within an hour. He said that repairing the mechanism was not necessary and he could rework the key lock, at a fraction of the cost, right away. He did. They work great. Effective & Efficient!!"

"I called Johnny Locksmith to have my mom's lock re-keyed after her keys came up missing. He responded promptly on a Saturday. Once he got there, he mentioned that the lock could not be re-keyed due to the lock being so old (I had figured as much). He then said that he would have to rebuild the entire cylinder, which is expensive. He then suggested adding a deadbolt. He installed the deadbolt promptly and at a great price. My mom was really happy to have her home secure again. I highly recommend Johnny Locksmith."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Many local hardware stores have the equipment to copy basic keys at a low cost. Some locations may have freestanding machines where you can pick out a blank and insert it and your original key into the duplicating machine.

When the temps drop, sometimes you need to thaw a lock to regain access. Options include warming the key with warm water, applying a de-icing spray, or using a hair dryer on low heat. Avoid using boiling water to prevent damage. To prevent future freezing, consider installing a cover or shield over the lock to keep water and ice out. Remember to be patient and gentle during thawing to avoid damaging the lock or key. If all else fails, consult a professional locksmith.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes. The same goes for manual models.

Some find smart locks the safest option because it’s harder to manipulate codes without access to your phone. But it’s possible to get hacked even then. Consider installing an extended security system, like door and window alarms or surveillance cameras, to enhance security.

Smart locks offer a similar level of safety to traditional or conventional locks because they often use comparable locking mechanisms, such as deadbolts. The primary difference is the access method: smart locks use a login or code instead of a physical key, which adds convenience. While not inherently safer, some smart locks have added security features that can deter intruders, like shutting down after too many incorrect code attempts or being harder to pick. For the best security, it's recommended to combine any lock with other home safety features like motion-activated lighting, security cameras, and window and door sensors.
