Security experts recommend deadbolt locks as the most secure option for a house's exterior or entry doors. Deadbolts provide the best security because they can prevent most types of forced entry and are harder to lockpick. Common types include the standard single-cylinder deadbolt, which is often found on front doors. For enhanced security, you can opt for a double-cylinder deadbolt, which requires a key to operate from both the inside and the outside.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key: 

• They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

• They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

• They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key. 

First thing first: Make sure you’re using the right key. If it’s the correct key for your lock, there are a few reasons why it may not be working, like the key is worn out or the lock is jammed. It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism.
