"If you need someone to refinish your deck, Erik Woods is the person to call. He is punctual, extremely thorough with the job, and is quite reasonable. Our deck had not had a good staining for a number of years. And, when we had done it ourselves, the stains we were using over the years did not hold up that well. Erik started by power-washing the deck and the over-arching pergola. He then sanded the deck with a regular floor sander and the pergola boards and railings with a palm sander. He then applied a stain on everything. He was careful to cover all adjacent parts of our house with plastic so no stain got anywhere it wasn't supposed to. The deck is looking better than it ever has. On a scale of 1 to 10, Erik gets a 10+."

"Scott did an outstanding job on the roof of the garage/and back half of the house. They installed and repaired gutters. Then they moved all the furniture, painted the whole first floor and removed some wallpaper. Replace some ceiling tiles. We are having them return to install a handrail and a towel bar. We would highly recommend them for any of your home repair needs."

"I saw Clayton work on my boyfriend’s deck and he completely transformed the work on the backyard. Clayton truly goes above and beyond to consistently update us on his progress and explain his rationale for the decisions he needs to make to provide the highest quality of work. He is very thorough and shows through this work ethic that he has the client’s best interest as his primary goal. He would be my go-to for any backyard project!"

"Trevor Brown was great at removing a hefty snow pack from my roof. He was able to get the job done within a day of my speaking with him. Very thorough and careful, checking in with me during the project to make sure any concerns were addressed. He did exactly what I needed, and cleaned up afterwards. Reasonable pricing, honest and diligent. I highly recommend Precision Renovations."

Small jobs welcome

"Mike was timely, actually early in starting the job and finishing. He did an amazing job and said if we found anything we were unhappy with, he would come right back and fix it. We are very happy with how our deck looks."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.

Pressure-treated lumber is one of the most affordable types of decking upfront. This material is widely available, so you can usually find pressure-treated lumber at almost any local home improvement store you visit. Keep in mind that wood requires a lot of upkeep with repainting and restaining, so any kind of wood may be more expensive in the long run than something like PVC decking.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.
