"Muddy Driveways performed a superb job on our very challenging, broken and beaten up driveway. They were honest, intelligent, attentive, efficient, and helpful in every way possible. It now looks fantastic and is extremely safe to drive on. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of work on their driveway."

"Frank and his crew were great! He gave us an estimate, showed up on the date scheduled with a full crew, and was finished in one day. He stayed on the job personally all day. Did a good job grading, laid a thick, sturdy base, and then a 3" compacted asphalt. Paid special attention to the edges. Driveway looks beautiful, and we've been happy. Definitely recommend All County Paving."

"I hired Rogers Landscaping for an emergency repair to my driveway due to water erosion. They showed up ASAP and removed the existing culvert pipe, installed a larger one and redid my driveway better than it was before. Their work is extremely professional and I would recommend them to anyone who is in need of driveway repairs. They are a 5 star business and I give them 2 thumbs up!!! Such a pleasure to work with!"

"From the quote process to the completion of my driveway install today, Chris and Seal King Paving were amazing. I got about 6 quotes, and Seal Kings was the best, but what sold me on them was the things Chris pointed out that other companies did not inform me about. The crew showed up early today and even though the driveway was long and on a hill, they finished quickly, and cleaned up everything. The entire crew worked efficiently and had great attitudes. I highly recommend Seal King if you need a new driveway! My driveway looks amazing!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

A driveway approach is the part of a driveway where the public road meets the private driveway. This section contains several key elements, including the driveway apron, the curb cut, and the end slope. Depending on the slope of the driveway, this area may also contain the trench drain.

Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.
