You do not have to drain your pool before converting it to salt water. The times when you should consider doing so are when you have been using an antibacterial agent. While you should avoid draining an above ground pool on a regular basis, it may be necessary if you are experiencing common signs of major pool problems. When you fully drain your pool, do so slowly with the proper equipment and always avoid draining on a very hot day. In many cases, the pool liner and equipment depend on the cooling effect of the water.

Building a pool yourself will take at least eight to 12 weeks. After all, this is the building timeline after hiring a pool contractor who knows how to draw up plans, analyze your landscape, and apply for proper permits. If you choose to tackle any part of the process alone, assume building a pool will take two to three months at a minimum.

There are a few differences when it comes to winterizing above- vs. inground pools. Above ground pool winterization usually involves less hassle, time, and expense than the process for winterizing an inground pool. All the lines on an above ground pool are easy to access, making draining easier. Plus, above ground pools are typically smaller, meaning cleaning is quicker, and chemicals cost less.

Fiberglass pools require the least amount of maintenance. Part of this has to do with their durability. Fiberglass has a smooth, non-porous surface that helps resist algae growth, cutting down on weekly maintenance. They also require less long-term maintenance than other pool types. They don’t need resurfacing like concrete pools, and you won’t have to replace the liner like you would with a vinyl-lined pool.
