"Noah worked with me on a price for this project that I was unhappy with prior to his arrival. I asked him to pull up pavers and relay them; this required him to level the ground again, clean the pavers, cut them to size, and set up mulch beds alongside. Through the process, Noah worked professionally and I was very happy with the results."

"CJ & K were quick to respond to my repair needs and finished the job in a timely fashion. The cost of my project was about half of what I had anticipated. They are reasonable and fair. They were also willing to do some extra "handyman" jobs while they were here. I will keep them in mind for future jobs and would recommend them to others."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a fence can range from 5 to 50 years, depending heavily on the material, local climate, and how well it is maintained. For example, a wooden fence might last 7 to 15 years, while a vinyl fence typically lasts 20 to 30 years. Metal, composite, and glass fences have some of the longest lifespans. Proper maintenance, such as regular cleaning, inspections, and staining or sealing for wood, is key to extending the life of any fence material. Vinyl and composite are durable options that don't require sealing.

Yes, like other types of wood fencing, pressure-treated fence boards can warp. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the likelihood of your fence warping. Sealing or staining your fence every few years, for example, can protect the wood against moisture, sun exposure, and temperature changes.

The standard height for a split rail fence is three or four feet. This height requires two to three horizontal rails, making it ideal for homeowners wanting a budget-friendly split rail fence. If you’re hoping to contain agile livestock or animals like dogs, geese, or goats, you may prefer to install a six-foot tall fence with four or five rails or a four-foot-tall fence with three horizontal rails. This will help prevent animals from climbing, crawling, or jumping through the rails.

You can use a few different tactics to prevent your deck gate from sagging. Aside from using strong, rot-resistant woods, introducing a diagonal element—such as a tension rod or solid piece of wood to act as a brace—across the gate will offer better support. You can also use rigid joists to prevent the gate from sagging.

A high-quality wrought iron fence is one of the most durable options available and can last a lifetime, or even centuries, with proper care. However, wrought iron is susceptible to rust and corrosion if not maintained.

To maximize its lifespan, regular maintenance is required. This includes:

  • Cleaning the fence with soapy water every six months.

  • Scrubbing away any rust or corrosion as soon as it appears.

  • Applying a new coat of paint or refinishing the fence every few years to protect the metal from moisture and oxygen. The recommended frequency varies, with sources suggesting anywhere from every 1 to 10 years.

If significant rust develops, it's wise to hire a professional fence repair company to clean the rust and reseal the fence. The cost to refinish a fence is typically between $5 and $12 per square foot, a worthwhile investment to ensure its longevity.
