"It went extremely well. We got three estimates and worked with the company who had the best plan for executing the job. Our water meter is very well hidden in our finished basement and there was no shut off valve for the water coming into the townhouse. Other plumbers were confused or had elaborate plans for placing a valve that would involve cutting numerous holes in sheetrock and placing access panels. Rhode's plumber had a straight forward, common sense plan that works great. Ditto on the gas lines. The price was fair, work done expertly and quickly. They will be doing all our plumbing work from now on."

Small jobs welcome

"I have used Ed for 2 smaller jobs so far. I found his prices to be fair and reasonable, him to be very accommodating, and his availability to be flexible in light of my schedule not being very flexible. I currently have estimates for a couple bigger jobs and we are working on scheduling those to be done."

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

A running toilet is not a plumbing emergency, but you will want to try some DIY fixes or call in a plumber to prevent wasting gallons of water. The three most common causes of a running toilet are a broken or dirty flapper, an incorrectly sized chain between the flush lever and flapper, or a float that is out of position.

The time it takes to fix a leaking pipe is determined by the location of the leak, the extent of the damage, and the experience level of the person completing this task. Leaks from exposed pipes should only take an hour or so, but that can increase to several hours if a significant section of pipe needs to be replaced. Pipes in walls or ceilings will take two to six hours, while complex underground pipe repairs can take multiple days.

No, you can’t convert a gravity-flush toilet to a pressure-assist toilet. Pressure-assist toilets include a tank-within-the-tank, and a standard gravity-flush toilet doesn’t have a capability to include the additional tank. If you want the benefits of a pressure-assist toilet, you’ll have to make the investment in a new one.

A sewage ejector pump is necessary if you have any plumbing fixtures, such as a bathroom, laundry room, or sink, located below the level of your home's main sewer line. Standard plumbing relies on gravity to move wastewater and solid waste to the municipal sewer or septic tank. However, for fixtures located below grade (e.g., in a basement), gravity is not sufficient.

The purpose of a sewage ejector pump is to actively pump this wastewater and solid waste upward into the main sewer line. Without an ejector pump in this situation, wastewater would have no way to exit and would eventually back up, causing a sewage overflow or flooding in your basement. If all of your home's plumbing is on the main floor or higher, gravity can handle the drainage, and an ejector pump is not needed.

Sewer ejector pumps need to be cleaned at least once a year by a professional. You shouldn’t attempt to clean it yourself because it can release sewer gasses that are toxic to humans and can be fatal. But to keep the system as clean as possible between professional inspection and cleaning services, be sure to only flush human waste and toilet paper. Avoid flushing items that can clog the system, like paper towels, grease, oil, or menstruation products.
