The crew worked efficiently, kept the area clean, and the roof looks excellent. Communication was clear throughout the entire process. "Buffalo's Best Roofing replaced my roof (full tearoff + cedar plank) in early 2020. It was roughly 5 1/2 months from signoff to actual roof replacement. Unfortunately, I did have a few problems during the roof replacement process and a portion of roofing that was missed completely, but at the end of the day, Roy made things right. My only suggestions are that the a thorough post-install inspection should be conducted with the homeowner in order to get a signoff on project completion and to make sure you fully tarp an open roof if there's rain/snow in the forecast. Despite everything, I would use them again."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Removing snow from your roof can help prevent ice dams, but the best thing to do is address insulation issues in your attic. If you do decide to remove the snow manually, you should always use a roof rake rather than a shovel. You shouldn’t climb your snowy roof in any circumstance, and roof rake allows you to remove the snow from the ground or a ladder. For the best results, remove snow as soon as possible after it falls.

The best roof replacement type depends on your budget and your particular climate, as well as your personal aesthetic. But in general, asphalt shingles are the best roof replacement type for homeowners looking for durability at a budget-friendly price. Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material—cost-effective, easy to install, lightweight, and the perfect choice for handy homeowners.

Yes, removing a chimney is a difficult and major undertaking. Chimneys often provide structural support to a home, so if it's a load-bearing structure, you'll need to take extra precautions to maintain your home's integrity. A project of this complexity typically requires a structural engineer, a masonry contractor, and a demolition crew. The removal process may involve taking the chimney out brick by brick from inside the walls. The cost for chimney removal can range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the job's complexity. Due to the difficulty and cost, some homeowners opt to remove the fireplace and seal the chimney at the top and bottom, sometimes also removing the visible exterior portion at the roofline.

If you choose tile for your roof, take the time to hire a true tile professional. Look at trusted online review sites to find a top-rated roofing contractor. This helps you zero in on great contractors while avoiding ones who bait and switch you with fluctuating bids.

After you’ve narrowed down a few great candidates with reasonable bids, there are some important questions to ask roofers before you hire. Be sure they are licensed, bonded, and insured before signing a contract. Once you find a roofer who checks off all your boxes, you’re ready to get your project started.

The terms “roof shingles” and “roof tiles” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the term “shingles” most often refers to asphalt, rubber, metal, or slate shingles, and the term “tiles” normally means they’re made from clay or concrete. In all cases, shingles are small, rectangular components that a roofer layers in an overlapping pattern to protect the structure underneath from the elements.
