"I could not have asked for a better person to do the job. James Walsh is such a nice person, I found him honest and trustworthy. James always showed up on time as well as his workers. Every step was explained to me from beginning to end "NO SURPRISES" as James says. I was comfortable with leaving for the day knowing that the job would be performed to my standards (which says a lot because I have never left anyone to work on my property alone before). The Job started on 4/20/17 and despite the poor weather was completed on 4/24/17. The Job far exceeded my expectations. The stoop and walkway look fantastic. "Ours was a small chimney job but one that needed to be done. I had a couple other estimates but wanted to wait the two weeks to get one from Alex due to great reviews on Angie's list. A little concerned we would get lost within the big jobs but Alex treated us as if we WERE a big job. Took care of a sidewalk issue for us while he was here as well. Very impressed with both the customer service skills, reliability, and the work quality. Definitely will be our choice for our patio and front porch work. Highly recommend !"

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

You’ll first need to install a base underneath your pavers for extra stability and drainage. Otherwise, the pavers can sink into the ground, and you’ll have to reinstall them. Use a base gravel layer of 4 to 6 inches for walkways and 10 to 12 inches for driveways. Compact your gravel layer every 2 to 4 inches so it’s nice and solid. After you install your gravel base, apply a 1-inch layer of sand on top.

The layer of polymeric sand under the pavers plus the polymeric sand that gets swept into the joints between your pavers holds them in place in a few ways. For one, the gritty texture of the sand helps lock the pavers together. Polymeric sand also contains bonding agents that get activated by water. Polymeric sand will take between 24 and 48 hours to fully cure, so do not walk on your paver walkway before this time.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

You can pour concrete over asphalt if it’s in good condition, thick, stable, and well-compacted. Concrete is more durable than asphalt and can extend the lifetime of your driveway without having to pay frequent asphalt driveway repair costs or replace it completely. 

But this is best reserved as a temporary solution based on budget restraints, as asphalt requires more frequent repairs and assessments than concrete. Once that concrete top is poured, it’ll be harder to accurately understand what’s happening beneath that layer, which could lead to more issues.
