"Very well. They have lived up to their reputation on Yelp as the cheapest and best solar installer in greater Las Vegas. Their sales manager Dan gave me 25 year transferable full labor warranty on solar panels, inverter, roof racks, bird protection panels, including to the manufacturer's transferable 25 year warranty on these items. Dan told me that after you have bargained down to the best price, then if you mention my name, Tien Cheng, M.D., he will extend the same warranty as he gave me. Panasonic, the solar panel manufacturer , also warranties that at 25 years after installation, (presumably several house owners later, the panels will continue to produce >90% of electricity as day 1. If we assume that electric rates increase 5% per year, I shall break even after 7 years. If we assume no rate increase, I shall break even after 9.3 years."

"Overall a great experience, the system on the vacation home is working great! Jake helped guide us through the solar buying process and effectively explained all the benefits without pressuring us into buying anything we weren’t comfortable with. Definitely would work with him again."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

You shouldn’t hook up a solar panel directly to a battery. That can damage the solar battery and your appliances over time. Instead, install a charge controller between your solar panel and solar battery. Charge controllers regulate voltage, prevent overcharging, and minimize the amount of electrical current to protect your battery from voltage spikes.

Ideally, you want to place them facing true south. This is different from what a compass shows, which is called the magnetic south. You can find true south by using an online calculator as long as you know the longitude and latitude of your property. Solar panel placement is key to maximizing the energy you generate, so this is an important step.

Installing solar panels involves drilling small holes in your roof to secure the solar panel mounting brackets. These brackets hold the solar panels in place and must withstand strong weather conditions so they’re secured into your roof. However, holes and screws are sealed to prevent leaking and further damage.

While you can install solar panels by yourself, it can be a complicated process full of lots of manual labor, risky roof work, and knowledge of electrical wiring. Most solar panel installation projects should be reserved for a trained professional—especially if you plan on connecting your panels to the electrical grid rather than for off-grid use, which doesn’t require utility services.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.
