"Why did I get an Energy Audit. So I could make informed decisions about how best to cut my energy bill for a tight budget. For me that was sealing up little cracks around light switches and bathroom fans. $50 of calking and foam. I estimated everything to an 8" x 8" opening. Two hours of work and it's like I closed a window that was opened a couple inches. For the next step It turns out I have plenty of insulation in my attic. It's just not installed correctly, hopefully I can do it myself or get a handyman to do it for a couple hundred dollars."

"I had difficulty in setting the appointment.  It was originally set for the day after Thanksgiving, 11/27, and I was told they would call if they decided not to work that day.  No one showed and I did not receive a call.  We reset the appointment for 12/10.  They came out on 12/10 at the appointment time specified.  They refastened all slipped tiles, caulked a broken tile and sealed a few areas.  I know this because the roofer took photos on his phone to show me the problem areas and the repairs made.  I was very pleased with their work and their professionalism.  Other than the problems with setting the appointment, I was very happy with the service.

"Las Vegas Air Conditioning had tried to fix my old water heater, but eventually they had to replace it. They did not charge me for the first call. Since then we had them back several times on various repairs and they have always given us good service above and beyond what I would expect. They had supplied all parts and labor and hauled away the old equipment. They were very good at cleaning up after themselves. We haven't had any reason to call them back on work they have already performed."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

Attic and whole-house fans improve a home's energy efficiency and comfort. They ventilate hot air from the attic, which reduces peak cooling loads, lowers reliance on air conditioning, and decreases indoor temperatures. This improved air circulation and expedited heat exit helps lower cooling costs, balance moisture levels, and enhance overall natural airflow, contributing to the efficient operation of other home equipment.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Yes, with features like LED lighting and variable speed controls for efficiency.

There is no blanket figure for a residential home’s electrical load, since load varies by the size of the home, how many appliances are used, and the efficiency of their electrical systems. Typically, however, it’s safe to assume 40 to 60 amps is the average electrical load of a residential home.

Dryers are designed to use as little electricity as possible, but power is still required to run the motor that turns the drum and to heat an element that pumps hot air. Eco devices are available and may lead to cost savings in the long term, but you should run the figures before committing to an eco-friendly device as they are often much more expensive to purchase.
