The sales rep spent a long time measuring the house while we looked at the few samples he brought inside. When we didn't see anything we liked, he would go to his car and bring in a few more samples. After he had measured the house, he asked us if we ha found anything we liked. We showed him the laminate and carpet we selected and he began calculating a price. He didn't seem particularly knowledgeable about flooring and didn't offer any information about the product or the company other than to emphasize their "great" warranty when we asked questions. We were interesting in having approximately 950 sq ft of laminate and 450 sq ft of carpeting installed. We had already started looking around at different products so had some idea of where the pricing should be. His original quote was over $14,000 for everything which was ridiculous. When I asked what the square footage price was I was told they didn't price like that, their price included installation and all materials. I then asked if he just pulled a figure out of the air and was told that it didn't really matter because they would get us to a price we were comfortable with and asked us what price we were looking at paying. We countered with a considerably lower number. He said he wasn't authorized to ok the finally price and would have to call his boss which he did. Our offer was too low so they countered with a little over $6800 - over 50% off of their original quote which immediately raised some red flags, We thought that price was still too high so the boss told our sales rep to have us look at a different brand of flooring and if we saw something we liked the price would be just under $6400. We found something we liked but my husband told him we would need to think about it before make a final decision. The boss was still on the phone and said if we would sign right now we could get everything for $6000. We still wanted to think about it and asked for a day to decide. They said fine but we would lose the $6000 price.
We did some additional research and decided that the $6000 price was fair so about an hour after the sales rep left, we contacted him and told him if they would honor that offer we would proceed. The sales rep came back that evening and we finalized all the paperwork for the product as well as financing. This was on a Tuesday and installation was set to begin on Thursday so we spent all day Wednesday boxing up household items to make moving the furniture easier on the installers. We received 2 emails Wed morning confirming our installation appointments for both the laminate and the carpet. That evening we got a call advising that there had been an error in calculating the amount of laminate needed for our job and in order to have enough to do the job it would cost us an additional $2000. They would not honor their pricing for the other laminate we liked and as there was no other comparable products we liked we agreed to cancel the order. I told them I felt like a victim of a classic bait and switch. To say we were angry and upset would be an understatement considering all the prep work we had already done. However, after reading countless similar complaints on various sites as well as complaints regarding the quality of their installations, I think we're lucky this deal fell apart.
"Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We regret any confusion or miscommunication regarding the price of your order, and we understand your frustration. The carpet installers removed the old carpeting and padding, and they cleaned the bare concrete with brooms prior to installing the new padding. Unfortunately, they did not properly install the padding. For example, they cut strips of padding and laid them down the length of the hallway. They were not taped together, and in some places, there were gaps of an inch or more between the pieces of padding. I believe I should have had a single contiguous piece of padding, not scraps. The gaps were very obvious when walking down the hallway. Many of the seams were very obvious, and some of the tack strips had hammer marks in them. The installers also caused some minor damage to furniture, doors, and floor boards as they moved everything to install the carpeting.
The linoleum installation was a disaster. There were several large bubbles, adhesive on the top of the flooring, and the installers failed to properly align the two large pieces of linoleum, creating a noticeable seam. They laid the linoleum up to the face of the dishwasher and cut it there. (When I ultimately replace the dishwasher, it's unlikely that it will fit precisely the same way.) The caulking around the perimeter of the kitchen was terrible. It was non-existent in some places, and when viewed from a distance, it varied in width from very thin to very thick. They applied caulking up to a half inch up the side of my cabinetry, and they applied caulking to the front of my dishwasher. When I pointed out the gap in the seam, their solution was to apply caulking in the seam.
This initial installation was in August.
I contacted Empire, and they sent out a supervisor to inspect the installation and address my issues. To their credit, they agreed to replace all the linoleum in the kitchen and repair the padding gaps. However, they did not have the same materials in stock, so I had to wait.
Empire sent another team of installers out to rectify the problems. They quickly repaired the padding issue by replacing the strips of padding used by the first installers with a single piece of padding. The new padding appears to be slightly thicker than the padding used by the first installers. They then removed the linoleum and scraped away the caulking around the baseboards. They installed new linoleum. This team also struggled with making a seam, although it is better than the first attempt. They put down an even bead of caulking around the baseboards. And, they put some linoleum an inch or two under the front of the dishwasher so that it could be replaced. Unfortunately, when scraping away the old caulking, they caused new damage to the baseboards, exposing raw wood by scraping away the paint. They also tore the linoleum they just installed in the process of pushing the refrigerator back into place. So I have a nice 3 inch tear in my brand new linoleum! While a minor issue, from a cosmetic perspective, they laid down the linoleum without considering the pattern. The pattern mimics tile, and the way they installed it is not consistent with the way a person laying tile would do it. It looks...awkward.
This second installation was completed in October, two months after the initial installation.
Both teams were contracted by Empire to do the installation work; they were not Empire employees. The problem, as I see it, is that Empire does not have adequate quality control over their contractors. You'll likely be pleased with the product and the customer service, but the installation is entirely hit-or-miss. And while I applaud them for standing behind their service, in the end, I still have a sub-par installation with a large tear created by the installers. No one ever contacted me to ask if I was satisfied, even after the second installation.
"Thank you for making us aware of this situation. It’s disappointing that you are not yet satisfied with your installation, as we want all of our customers to be happy with the work that’s done in their homes. Website said I would receive a call day before the appointment.
Call never came so i got curious and Googled Empire Today to see what appears.
I found many COMPLAINTS including very current ones posted on numerous websites.
I did not find ANY reviews on Angies List.
I then sent an email to cancel my appointment.
One day later, a salesperson shows up at my front door.
I ignored the doorbell and knocking but she persisted so i finally opened my door.
I politely told her the appointment has canceled and why.
started to dial her phone.
She then said and quot; You will have to talk to my officeand quot; and started to dial her phone.
Since when does a salesperson (who I didn't ask for) tell me who I must speak to and when?
I smiled, told her I had to get back to my business and closed the door.
Then my phone started ringing, an Unknown caller from 800-588-2300.
I did not answer the call.
They called back 3 more times, so i then blocked their number.
They left me a voicemail saying I should call them to reschedule my appointment!
Bottom Line: If you want to deal with what appears to be a BIG company with lots of complaints,
zero reviews on Angies List and deal with the likes of the aforementioned, GO FOR IT!
Almost forgot to mention something else the saleswoman at my front door said:
She said that ALL the negative online reviews are posted by their competitors.
If you believe that, contact me so I can sell you the Eiffel Tower.
