"David G. With The Happy Outlet worked ob a number of electrical problems, repairs, installations and upgrades we had been wanting for almost a year. He worked diligently using his expertise to provide an estimate for each request initially, then beginning to complete each item one after the other professionally. He was friendly and helpful and did not complain about the surrounding chaos . We are in the middle of remodeling the kitchen, replacing the downstairs flooring and remodeling the master bathroom to accomadate handicapped access. Each project was in the throws of demolituon. We also have large dogs who wereantsy with everythung going on around them. Undaunted and calm he met each challenge efficiently without complaint. He is welcome in our house anytime and hopefully will be our swrviceman miving forward for any future electrical needs."

"Craig, the owner, was very responsive to my quote inquiry. He cautioned me ahead of time that there may be some minor patching repairs needed around the holes they would cut to install the lights. I thought his quote was very fair and he was able to schedule the service within a few days. He and an assistant arrived right on time to start the work. Craig clearly knew what he was doing and he and his assistant finished the work in about 3.5 hours. They did a good job of cleaning up when they were done. The new lighting looks great."

"I called Jake on short notice to repair an electrical outlet in the garage (which continually tripped). He came out even though it was late in the day. He diagnosed the problem and replaced the GFI outlet. Great service. I will be contacting Jake when I am back in town to perform additional work at the house."

Small jobs welcome

"I needed an access point installed in our house that had an addition. I was able to do most of the Ethernet cables in the house but due to the addition I was not able to get the Ethernet cables into the newer part of the house. I had posted in the Lemon Valley community on Facebook but got some completely ridiculous replies. Shane said he would like to come take a look and provide a quote. Shane arrived on time, quoted the job and explained his experience. After talking with him I also had him relocate some items that Spectrum said could not be moved. Shane’s work was fantastic. He was able to run the Ethernet cables, mounted the access point and was able to relocate the Spectrum boxes in a hall closet. Shane was very professional and his quoted price was the final price. I highly recommend Shane and will use him for future work!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

If your home already has a grinder pump and you’re still noticing issues (like frequently clogged toilets and sinks), it could be time to upgrade your grinder pump. Start by checking your existing horsepower. If there are four or fewer people living in your home, using a 1/2-horsepower grinder pump should be sufficient. Larger households should consider investing in a 1-horsepower grinder pump to maximize wastewater removal efforts.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.
