"Great. Based in Grass Valley. Small family business. Drove down to Citrus Heights and fixed my panel with no problems. Even offered a generator when my power was out. We had to wait awhile for SMUD coordinate their inspectors."

"He diagnosed and fixed the issue. Showed up early evening, after what I assume was a long day, because we were under a time crunch, and that was greatly appreciated."

"Larry was spectacular. He was prompt and professional. We asked for him a quote to replace our electrical panel. Another electrician had examined the panel earlier in the day, told us it needed to be replaced with a 200 amp panel, and quoted us $6,800 for the job. Larry stopped by at the end of his day to take a look. He told us the panel was in fine condition, asked why we were looking to replace it, and suggested that we simply replace one of the old breakers ourselves. Saved us $6,800! Next time I need electrical work, I'll definitely call Larry because I'm confident that he won't try to sell us any services or repairs that we don't need!"

"I hired a different electrical company as a certified Generac generator service technician. Red Rock did the job in 28 minutes at our home in Tahoma. Found out the installing company, Winters Electric of South Lake Tahoe, left a natural gas orfice in the generator instead of changing over to propane. Red Rock then went through a complete installation sequence to make sure there wasn't something else missed. Well done."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Yes, installing a generator usually increases your property value because buyers are getting the added peace of mind knowing they’ll be able to maintain power through blackouts. In most cases, you should see close to a 100% return on investment (ROI). Keep in mind that home generators usually need a permanent foundation, and installing a concrete slab will likely raise your property taxes slightly.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.
