I am very surprised that the owner let those cupcakes out the door, especially since they were burnt. It was not evident that they were burnt until they were cut into. We also wanted to create a blue and purple swirl down the cupcake tower but the decorator airbrushed blue coloring on chocolate icing making the icing look black. I would have expected a phone call from the decorator offering a different idea to create that effect. Although I didn't ask, I am surprised the owner did not offer to refund part of our money, especially since the cakes were so overcooked. A few months ago we had plumbing work done in our master bath which left a big hole in the tile and sheet rock around the plumbing fixtures in our tub surround. Instead of just having the hole repaired with new sheet rock and similar 4x4 old school tiles, we've decided to update this small 3/4 bath in our very modest ranch style home, built in 1971. I've been an Angie's List member for a long time, so I did my due diligence and researched bath and remodel providers. After reading all of the very positive reviews of Michael Thompson and Bath Time Renovations, he was top of my list and the first phone call I made. I initially contacted Mike on July 1st. He returned my call in a very timely fashion, and we set up a meet and greet for 9am on Thursday, July 3rd. Mike showed up right on time for our appointment, and my wife and I showed him our bathroom, and our predicament with the gaping hole behind the hot and cold water fixtures (which we currently have taped over and covered with a section of old shower curtain in an attempt to keep too much water from getting behind the wall). Yes, a bit on the white trash side, but you do what you must when not sitting on heaps of gold bullion. We asked Mike for three estimates: #1) To simply remove and replace old tile and sheet rock and update the tub surround with more current tile and cement board. #2) To convert the tub to a walk-in shower and tile same. The 3rd estimate we asked for was a complete remodel of the bathroom, which would enclose the vanity area, thereby creating a full, private bath, as opposed to the current layout, which is very dated. Mike seemed amenable to our request for the three estimates, and he certainly seemed interested in the job. He took several pictures and we chatted for quite a while regarding where my wife and I in regards to getting much needed updates done on our house, which we have put off for several years due to the real estate market going into the toilet. Since our appointment was made on the 3rd, Mike let us know that he'd follow up with us after the holiday weekend, probably by Wednesday, 7/9. He also let us know that he was really booked, and it would probably be at least two weeks before he could start the job after getting us our bid. We were fine with that. July 9th rolled around and I hadn't yet heard from Mike, so I sent him an e-mail, just so that he would have my correct e-mail information because I know how errors can happen when people write down e-mail addresses and such. I did not get a response. On Friday July 11th at 7:30 in the evening, I sent him a text and included my name, and asked how the estimate was coming along. I made sure to thank him. Neither my email or text were aggressive or condescending, just a general inquiry as to the status of his estimate, and both times I was polite and thanked him. No response to my text. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, 7/ 12, at 1:30, I called and left a message. Again, inquiring as to his estimate, and I let him know we were looking forward to working with him, and that we hoped our job wasn't too small for him to take on, and to let us know one way or another about the job. It's now Monday, 7/14 and no response from Mr. Thompson. We really liked Michael and got a very good vibe from him, which is important to us. We're gay, and sometimes you just don't want to receive a condescending attitude within the confines of your own home. And it's happened in the past, but that's neither here nor there. But the drag of the thing is, were were so on board with hiring Michael, that I had stopped getting other bids. It's my hope that nothing awful has happened to Michael, or to anyone in his family, because he doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would just blow off a potential customer and not follow up at all. We have so much work to be done on this house, this job could have potentially led to other things we need to have done, like a kitchen remodel. Again, as stated when I started this lengthy review, I'm really bummed that I had to give him a crappy review, especially when he got so many wonderful reviews.

Run, do walk away from this company. Last March (2013) we had a leak in the ceiling of one of our guest bedrooms. The leak was along the ceiling against the outer wall of the room. Called Otero and sons on recommendation of our son who was having a house built and Otero was the contractor his builder used. His builder is a reputable company and we went on what we thought was a good way to go. Estimator came out, inspected, and then recommended replacing tar and gravel roof with new TPO system. More expensive, but better system, longer lasting, and adds insulation factor to roof. We got the estimate, gave the OK, paid deposit, ready to go. First problem.....roofers come out, scrape off old tar and gravel, deliver supplies, start work, and quickly find out roof is not suitable to apply TPO. Needs to have 88 or so sheets of some type of insulation batting installed first, (add an additional $3800.00 to original cost of $13,000.00). OUCH, but now tar and gravel is removed, and we have no roof protection. Ok, go ahead fix what needs to be fixed. All is well until July.....work on roof did well during drought...not so great when it actually rained! First leak was in master bedroom. Wet spot on ceiling around the ceiling fan. Oh, did I fail to mention we have unfinished wood ceilings though out the house. Water leaks really look ugly on wood, and are much more difficult to remove than replacing sheet rock and repainting. Owner comes out, can't figure what is wrong. Goes over the work, has some seams resealed, hoses water around, can't get it to leak so assumes repair is done. More rain, leak gets larger.... Owner returns, more confusion, more investigation, more sealing of seams....more hosing of water around skylights, same result, can't get water to leak, again assumption that repair is complete. More rain, repeat above procedure again. Damage to ceiling in the master bedroom expanding, getting much worse. Rain again, now not only master bedroom ceiling is damaged (and still getting wet) we now have it expanded to master bathroom ceiling. More repairs, more water tests, think we got it NOW. Raid stops for awhile, no more leaks...yea! Oooops, rain returns in September. We are out of town until 7:00pm Friday the 13th. Come home to massive leaks in all three bedrooms, two bathrooms, dining room, hallway, and garage. Water running down the walls, and spreading across the wood ceilings. Great, can't call Otero, they don't have an after hour number. They close up shop Friday at 4:00pm. Leave a message we will call you back Monday. Sure, really helpful. Had enough of this, call insurance company, have them send a water extraction company and try over weekend to limit further damage. Out Otero comes again. Can't figure out what is the problem. They then send their stucco subcontractor out to see if he can solve mystery. Wonderful man, very kind, concerned, and yea, competent. Mystery solved. TPO not sealed all the way up inside the canailles so heavy rain is pouring not only off the roof, but pouring over the interior of the canailles and down inside the walls. He also finds some damage to the parapets. Sub makes repairs....no more flooding or damage. Well done, except a small sky light is damaged. Otero to replace. Which brings me to the next fiasco. Sky light was not measured correctly so when the new one is brought out to be installed, won't fit correctly. Owner comes out to measure for replacement. Two weeks go by, no word on replacement, call Otero's. Owner comes back out to remeasure, ( can you say oooops, forgot all about us, lost original measurements). Another wait, no word....then phone call, worker is at gate with replacement. Worker arrives with new sky light, removes ill fitting skylight, ooooops again, wrong size. Yet another measurement. Another wait....... Out they come again, same procedure, remove old, attempt to replace the sky light that again is the wrong size. This time they blame the sky light maker. At this point, wouldn't you have checked the size when you picked it up and before you drove out to Edgewood, climbed up on the roof, removed the sky light yet again, to find it still is wrong. New sky light is supposed to be in, and we put it off during the Holidays as we had a house full of company. We'll see. Bottom line.....was original leak in March because of parapet damage? Could we have avoided the whole mess and expense if the original estimator had really looked at the roof leak problem. Taken the time to really inspect the roof before quoting the price before the additional 88 sheets of batting were required at additional cost. Oh gee, I don't know, gotten the repair done before massive damage was done to our beautiful home? As I said at the beginning....run, don't walk away.
It went well. Holidays are a bad time for things to go wrong and the fellow that came out was an hour early and got it done right away. Christmas saved.
