"I highly recommend Luis and Gladys. They responded right away to my inquiry and came to look at our project and provided a quote and set a date. They communicated clearly, arrived on time and did a very thorough job. They take a lot of pride in their work. We had 4 flower beds that were overgrown with grass and weeds and very hard to clear out, and they did a great job. We will definitely be calling them again!"

"Wonderfully! Dave came over, we discussed my ideas, and he sent over two marvelous workers, Luis and Jesus, to begin clearing out the messy existing yard. From start to finish, it took 3 1/2 days to transform my front yard from a scraggly ensemble of worn-out elements, to a clean, attractive area with variety and contrast. I chose three different rock/pebbles, in three different sizes, graduating in size, color and texture, from sidewalk to in front of the healthy juniper hedge at the front of the house. Despite a slight miscommunication regarding the wish for curves, rather than straight lines, Luis and Jesus corrected the lines, working with me, so the result is not totally rectilinear. They were personable, hard-working and collaborative, and went the extra mile: Luis managed to find smaller sized pebbles, in the same color, for the back area rather than the ones offered to me, and removed a large elm crowding evergreens on the edge of my property., as well as the volunteer in the center. They arrived and worked unobtrusively, and left the property in pristine shape. Dave Peltz, the owner, has chosen his staff very well, and lets them get on with it with minimal interference, which facilitated the smooth and swift progress of the work. Any need to consult with him was done by the workers, by phone. The cherry on top, so to speak, is that Empire's bid came in at almost half the amount of quotes from other Angie A-listers! I'm a happy camper and definitely recommend this company and these workmen."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Yes, and in many cases, you should. Large gravel works best as a base layer because it improves drainage and keeps the surface stable. A top layer of smaller gravel fills in gaps and creates a smoother, more compacted surface. This combination is common in driveways and high-traffic areas where both stability and comfort matter.

The best way to landscape your front yard on a budget is to invest in hiring a professional for hardscaping—things like upgrading walkways, redoing driveways, and installing partitions around garden beds. You can often do the softscaping yourself—think laying down mulch, caring for your lawn, removing weeds, and planting flowers and shrubs. It’s also almost always worthwhile to pay a professional for routine yard maintenance, as this dramatically improves curb appeal and delivers above 100% ROI in most cases.

Gravel driveways require regular maintenance because the material can shift over time. Routine tasks include raking the gravel to ensure an even layer, filling in ruts or low spots, and removing debris, especially after storms. You should also add fresh gravel as needed to prevent potholes, remove weeds by hand or with an herbicide, and occasionally spray the driveway with water to reduce dust.

Periodically, you may need to grade and level the entire driveway, which is often done every few years. Any refilled potholes should be compacted; for excessive dust, you can use a mechanical compactor. To minimize future maintenance, ensure the land is properly graded before installation and consider laying down landscaping fabric to help keep the gravel in place. In areas with heavy rain, reinforcing the edges can help prevent erosion. Additionally, it's best to avoid using a snowplow on a gravel driveway during the winter.

The least costly way to keep grass from growing is also the most labor-intensive: regular weeding. Pull out grass blades as you see them pop up through the soil in areas where they’re unwanted. Another cost-effective way to keep grass from growing is by spreading a thick layer of mulch on the area as this will suffocate the grass.

The best equipment for moving large rocks from your yard depends on their size and weight. A heavy-duty wheelbarrow or a rock dolly can be effective for smaller boulders. A skid-steer loader or a mini-excavator with a grapple attachment provides the necessary power and control for larger, heavier rocks that you can’t lift manually. Professionals may use a larger excavator and ratchet hoist to remove larger boulders.
