"This company built a French drain to move water in an area that floods. The project went well and the work was very fast and they came prepared. They also installed a path with railroad ties and gravel so that we can safely walk down the hill to our garden. Lastly, Ernie and his crew moved railroad ties to help us access our property. The price was very fair and the estimate was very accurate: No surprises! These guys care and are very honest. No BS. I would use them again."

"Wonderfully! Dave came over, we discussed my ideas, and he sent over two marvelous workers, Luis and Jesus, to begin clearing out the messy existing yard. From start to finish, it took 3 1/2 days to transform my front yard from a scraggly ensemble of worn-out elements, to a clean, attractive area with variety and contrast. I chose three different rock/pebbles, in three different sizes, graduating in size, color and texture, from sidewalk to in front of the healthy juniper hedge at the front of the house. Despite a slight miscommunication regarding the wish for curves, rather than straight lines, Luis and Jesus corrected the lines, working with me, so the result is not totally rectilinear. They were personable, hard-working and collaborative, and went the extra mile: Luis managed to find smaller sized pebbles, in the same color, for the back area rather than the ones offered to me, and removed a large elm crowding evergreens on the edge of my property., as well as the volunteer in the center. They arrived and worked unobtrusively, and left the property in pristine shape. Dave Peltz, the owner, has chosen his staff very well, and lets them get on with it with minimal interference, which facilitated the smooth and swift progress of the work. Any need to consult with him was done by the workers, by phone. The cherry on top, so to speak, is that Empire's bid came in at almost half the amount of quotes from other Angie A-listers! I'm a happy camper and definitely recommend this company and these workmen."

"Eric responded quickly to my request. The service was scheduled in the same week. Crew was on time. Eric even called to let me know he was a little delayed, which was most appreciated and showed respect for me as a customer. The crew was professional and did an excellent job in removing the trees. The stray Elm trees were also removed at my request. Everything was cleaned up and left very neat. I would definitely hire again and since I have a landscaping project in mind, I will definitely have them perform this work as well."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Colored mulch can be bad for plants in that it robs them of nitrogen as it depletes the soil to break itself down. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to test your soil to check the nitrogen levels. If the nitrogen levels are low, use fertilizer with extra nitrogen or switch to regular mulch.

Another downside of colored mulch is if it’s heavily contaminated, it can contaminate the soil and damage your plants. To avoid this, look for the MSC certification logo on the mulch bag before purchasing.

Yes, rotting leaves can be good for your soil. The decaying leaves release nutrients into the soil that can boost the health of your plants, and the organic matter also helps improve airflow and water drainage.

No, gravel and crushed rock are different. Crushed rock is made in a quarry and has sharp, jagged edges. It’s most commonly used for building and construction.

Gravel naturally occurs in river beds or lakes and features smooth edges, making it a better choice for landscaping or other decorative areas. Like crushed stone, gravel can also be found in quarries, but it’s typically due to rock-on-rock erosion rather than machinery.

Yes, you can put soil on top of existing grass to level small areas. This is helpful for filling in small divots or leveling out minor dips in your yard that collect rainwater. However, this isn’t a good option if you need to regrade your entire lawn. It’s better to have a professional excavate some of the dirt first so that the level of the lawn doesn’t rise too high.

In most cases, it’s better to remove rocks before adding mulch. Layering the two will restrict drainage and plant health, and can create an unpleasant texture underfoot.
