"the job was completed by 2 men but the fence & gate are not lined up straight; more of a zigzag & gate did not close properly so I had to have someone else redo the gate closure. They did not use a plumb line; just eyeballed it... Luckily it's in my backyard so not many people see it. At least they got the job done quickly right after I moved into my new home & needed a safe place to keep our dogs.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Proper wind management and routine maintenance determine the longevity of your fireplace service. Clovis experiences persistent high winds, making a wind-resistant flue cap essential to prevent downdrafts. Extreme temperature swings cause mortar to freeze and thaw rapidly, requiring high-quality masonry materials. Schedule annual professional cleanings to remove heavy agricultural dust, and hire contractors experienced with the eastern high plains climate to ensure lasting, code-compliant results.

Helpful?

Several types of professionals handle fireplace service in Clovis. Certified chimney sweeps manage wood-burning flue cleaning and basic firebox repairs. For gas inserts and log installations, hire licensed HVAC contractors or plumbers with gas endorsements. Structural masonry repairs require licensed general contractors. Because the local market is small, expect some specialized contractors to travel from neighboring cities in the Texas Panhandle or other parts of the state.

Helpful?

You can safely manage minor fireplace service tasks by clearing visible dust and sand from the firebox floor. In Clovis, high winds blow debris inside, so check the damper before heating season. Test for wind-driven downdrafts by holding a smoke source near the opening. Relight a gas pilot following manufacturer instructions, but leave gas line repairs and deep flue cleaning to local professionals to ensure your home stays safe.

Helpful?

Prioritize a full inspection before starting any fireplace service. High winds in NM blow significant dust and agricultural debris into chimneys, creating blockages even in vacant homes. Hire a certified specialist to sweep the flue and check the exterior cap for wind damage. Install carbon monoxide detectors to protect your household, and verify whether previous owners converted wood-burning units to gas without proper permits.

Helpful?

Prevent delays with your fireplace service by scheduling inspections in late summer before the heating season begins. High spring winds and freezing winter nights in NM restrict exterior masonry repairs. Always verify your contractor holds an active state license and pull required municipal permits for structural or gas modifications. Factor in extra time if your project requires coordinating a temporary shutoff with the local gas utility.
