"Masonry by Tommy listened to our needs and offered ideas to make it better. He offers the best quality work. The workers are very professionals, polite, and neat. Their attention to detail and the appearance of their finished work is the best we have ever seen. In repointing old brick and laying concrete slabs, they matched the color of our 20-year-old masonry. I would highly recommend Tommy to everyone!"

"I live in Richmond, Staten Island, and my old concrete steps were in terrible condition. The corners were deteriorating badly, pieces were breaking away, and the whole thing was really starting to fall apart. I knew I needed to get it taken care of properly, so I called TriStone Masonry & Restoration. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made. The guys removed the old deteriorated step and built me a completely brand-new step from scratch. The workmanship was excellent, everything was finished neatly, and the new step looks completely different from what was there before. The work was completed a couple of months ago and I haven’t had a single problem since. The step still looks great and feels solid and properly built. The whole team was professional, hardworking, and easy to deal with from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend TriStone Masonry & Restoration to anyone in Staten Island who needs masonry or step work done. Best guys around and I couldn"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can paint stone on the exterior of a house. It’s important to properly prep the stone by cleaning off dirt and debris. You’ll want to apply at least two coats of paint to get the most even and complete coverage. Any pinholes or missed spots, however small, can allow moisture to get into the masonry and potentially cause the paint to blister and peel from the stone.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

The best color to paint a brick fireplace comes down to personal taste. However, neutral colors—like white or gray—will open the space and create a bright modern look, making them popular options. However, choosing a bold color can turn your fireplace into a feature piece that will be the talk of all family gatherings.

They provide excellent heat retention and durability and add a classic aesthetic to a home.

Limewash can be removed from brick, but the method of removal will depend on how long the limewash has been on the brick. If the limewash has fully dried—which happens after about five days—you’ll need to use a diluted muriatic acid mixture to remove it. If there are multiple coats of limewash, you may need to apply the acid mixture several times to fully remove it from the brick.
