"Kevin upgraded the brick steps of my South Philadelphia rowhouse by installing bluestone treads and landings. He did a terrific job using quality materials and tools, thoroughly cleaned up afterwards, was reliable and communicative, and charged a reasonable price for a challenging job. I highly recommend KMJ Masonry and would not hesitate to call on them again."

"I am an engineer by trade and the small retaining wall was very well constructed. 6 "gravel base, both bottom rows of block filled with crushed stone. Approx 50' of wall, took 19 hrs over 2 days, including clean up. Hardworking 2 man crew. I highly recommend."

"Local Boys (Bill Cunningham) was fair priced, on time, and performed quality work for us. We saw another project completed by Local Boys (Bill Cunningham) and were impressed with the quality of the work so we had them quote a large patio (1,000sqft) with multiple levels. The price was extremely fair for the work and we could not be happier with the outcome. We even added a few things on to the project and Bill handled all of the changes with ease. The guys showed up on schedule when Allyson said they would be there, and the electronic payment of the invoices was simple and convenient, especially during the COVID-19 times. I would definitely use them again for any concrete/masonry work and I would not hesitate to recommend them."

"I hired Aztec for major repairs due to termite damage. They were prompt, professional, and easy to work with. They came in less than 10 days after we contacted them to FINISH the work. First, they evaluated the damage and walked me through the needed repairs which included placing three new steel support beams along with two main horizontal wood beams and several sistered beams. They were able to complete the work, once they started, in three days. At each step, I was informed of progress and there were no surprises (from my end). The work included everything from removing electrical wiring and then replacing it, pouring the new steel vertical support beams, affixing them solidly into my concrete floor, and then pacing the numerous horizontal beams. I could not recommend AZtec (and Greg!) more."

"The actual project was to cut a drain into my patio to allow for the water to drain off to a sump tank and pumped to the front of the house. The patio floods during heavy rain and last month, the water came into the house and ruined 3 floors. They did this job and my master bedroom tile job at the same time. They are the kind of people who you can trust in your home when you are at work. I can't recommend them highly enough. Quality of work, attention to detail, promptness, value. Joe stayed in constant contact throughout the job."

"Crew was extremely meticulous to details. They were very neat and accommodating as we live in a development that has a lawn service. They moved all of their equipment to allow for the landscapers to do the lawn work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Inspect your property for stair-step cracking or bowing walls, which indicate complex foundation issues. Many mid-century homes in Hammonton feature concrete block foundations that suffer from water infiltration and mortar deterioration due to acidic soil. Older properties with shallow footings, unlined chimneys, or multiple additions built in different eras require extensive professional modifications to ensure safe and lasting masonry work.

Helpful?

Start by documenting any winter freeze-thaw damage with photographs to help your contractor. Brush white salt deposits off brick surfaces using a stiff, dry brush. Wait for warmer spring weather in NJ before attempting minor surface repairs, as cold temperatures cause fresh mortar to fail. Always hire a professional for structural masonry work to keep your home completely safe.

Helpful?

Always hire licensed contractors who understand the unique conditions in New Jersey. Your professional must know how to select proper mortar mixes to withstand local freeze-thaw cycles. They should also have experience navigating sandy, acidic soils that impact foundation stability. Confirm they understand local permit requirements for structural masonry work, and always secure a detailed written contract before starting.

Helpful?

When planning masonry work, you have several options for local professionals in Hammonton. General masonry contractors handle a wide range of tasks. Specialty brick and block masons focus on older homes with concrete block foundations. You will also find chimney contractors for fireplace repairs, concrete specialists for driveways, and restoration masons experienced with historic brickwork in the downtown district.

Helpful?

Unexpected expenses during masonry work often stem from hidden structural or environmental issues. In Hammonton, excavating for foundations frequently reveals sandy soil that requires extra preparation or deeper footings to meet frost depth standards. You face additional expenses if professionals discover water damage inside older concrete block walls, deteriorated chimney liners, or hazardous materials like lead paint that demand safe removal.
