You’ll need at least 50-by-10 feet for a residential lap pool. Endless pools need as little as 15-by-8 feet. Deciding which type of pool is right for you and your family will depend heavily on the size of your backyard and what can comfortably fit. Your pool should only lose around 1/4 of an inch of water per day, give or take. More wind, sunlight, and heat will cause this number to increase, while rainy or cloudy days will decrease the amount of water that evaporates.

Certain pools serve as a middle ground between traditional swimming pools and hot tubs. The two main options are plunge pools and swim spas. A plunge pool (or cocktail pool) is smaller, but you can add spa-like elements such as heating and jets. A swim spa is more similar to a hot tub, but it produces a current that allows you to swim in place (similar to how a treadmill lets you run in place). 

It can take 24 to 48 hours to fill a 15,000-gallon pool with a garden hose. A hose will pump out anywhere from 4 to 12 gallons per minute, with the average hose resting somewhere between 8 to 9 gallons per minute.
