Most transition strips measure two to five inches wide, but it varies by floor type. The right gap for your flooring depends on the look you prefer. Vomit contains organic fluids along with whatever else comes out with it. When left without cleaning, vomit, and its odor can reach deep into carpet fibers and become very difficult to remove without a deep cleaning. In some cases, the combination can cause permanent carpet staining.  

There could be several reasons why your carpet padding has adhered to the floor. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • There was intentional gluing or stapling to the surface.

  • The polyurethane and floor bonded over years of wear.

  • Pet urine, spills, or other substances leaked through the carpet and created a sticky surface.

If the carpeting in the home has not been changed in a long time, clearing off the padding underneath could be difficult. Pet urine can wreak havoc on carpeting and the flooring underneath. If you plan to reinstall carpeting, remember to use proper cleaning techniques for removing pet urine odors to prevent future problems.

The best solvent for removing carpet glue depends on its chemical composition. Most carpet glue reacts well to a solvent made from orange oil. Use mineral spirits to remove tar-based glue, which has a darker, brownish tint. Methylene chloride paint stripper and lacquer thinner should also work, but beware of the nasty and dangerous fumes.
