"Jim called back within a day of me requesting an estimate and came by a couple of days later and followed up with a written estimate by email. He knew immediately what had caused my front steps to fail. He started the work in a week or so. I was please that he offered me some choices and what would cost more or less. He was able to use most of the existing brick and stone. He updated me each day on how the project was going. Jim was great to work with and did a fabulous job. While a hot fire can help heat up and loosen tar within your chimney, making it a recommended step before using a creosote log, it will not burn off significant existing buildup on its own. Attempting to remove built-up creosote with a hot fire is dangerous and can cause a chimney fire. The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is more complex. Unless the fireplace is ventless by design, you’ll need some type of exhaust pipe system to safely send fumes and other harmful byproducts out of the house. Even then, ventless fireplaces are not always permitted because they do keep the byproducts inside of your house. Ventless fireplaces are safest when installed in spaces that are themselves well-ventilated, like large rooms with lots of windows.

Not all gas fireplaces need a chimney. If you install a ventless gas fireplace, it will release low levels of combustion byproducts back into your living space (instead of pushing them outside through a chimney or vent). If you would rather use vinegar to clean the stone fireplace instead of dish soap, this mixture should work fine.
