"We had 165 feet of stone wall repair and a new retaining wall built. The men were very hard, talented workers. True craftsmen. Everything looks better than I could even imagine. We have a few more projects and I will definitely be calling MJ Masonry again."

"Detailed explanation and discussion of work required to replace steps and landing of the 150-year-old house. Very professional, detail-oriented, and aesthetically appropriate for the house and the needs of the occupants. Masonry was completed in a timely manner. Photos to show results will be added soon."

"Jim and his crew did an amazing job replacing our concrete stairs. He also took the time to make some adjustments, which made the stairs look way better than the original layout. Def would recommend hiring these guys."

Small jobs welcome

"I hired Adam over a year ago to build a decorative block retaining wall at my home with integrated granite steps, a stone walkway and new granite house stairs. His price was very reasonable and I was very pleased with the quality of his work. He was always attentive to my thoughts and suggestions and worked diligently to complete the project in a timely manner. He was very easy to work with and quickly helped me turn my initial idea into an end result that exceeded my expectations. My highest praise for Adam is for his commitment to customer service. Recently, about a year after completing the project, I contacted Adam about a small winter settling issue involving two steps in the walkway that he resolved quickly with no hesitation. Adam stands by his work and I do not hesitate recommending Artisan Masonry LLC."

"I had a great experience with Garcia’s Landscaping from start to finish. Phone calls were returned promptly, and they showed up exactly on time, which I really appreciated. He took the time to walk through the project with me, offering helpful advice—especially on where mulch was needed since it had been quite a while. Garcia’s took down a tree for us, created a beautiful stone path, replanted several areas, and handled a range of landscaping tasks that had been neglected for years. His team of five arrived at 8:00 AM and worked nonstop until 5:30 PM, hauling brush, rocks, and tackling everything with impressive effort and efficiency. I honestly never saw them take a break. They even climbed up onto our extremely overgrown trellis to remove thick brush—something I wasn’t sure anyone would take on, but they handled it without hesitation. Communication was excellent throughout—he kept me informed about weather and materials so there were no surprises. The entire project was completed"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Initially, brick staining is not cheaper than painting. However, while it has a higher up-front cost, it may be more cost-effective in the long run. Brick stain can last for 20 years or longer, compared to paint, which usually starts to peel away in three to five years.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Whether you’re installing brick siding over a traditionally-framed home or you’re using genuine brick construction to build, the biggest downside of a brick house is the higher cost you’ll pay for the materials and labor. Real brick construction also means your home build will take longer, as it’s more time-consuming to construct brick walls than it is to frame out your home.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Fireclay is a type of clay but it is a type of clay that, because of its chemical composition, can be fired at a much higher temperature than other clays. This results in a denser and more heat-resistant final material. Because of the high percentage of a mineral called kaolin, fireclay sinks are smoother and more durable than other clay types.
