"UPDATE: Our project has been completed and the work is excellent! A crew of 6-8 guys worked for about 10 days (due to some heavy rains) and were able to tear out the mess that was our backyard and rebuilt a 4.5 foot tie wall. It looks beautiful! Mike and the crew had to access the wall through our neighbors' backyard. The crew was very respectful and communicated well with the neighbors. As the wall is holding up our property we don't get the benefit of viewing the new wall, but our neighbors are extremely happy with the finished product as are we. People in the neighborhood have inquired about the builder as it looks so good! Schmidt construction built the wall with good drainage, a couple of feet of compacted fill rock, and pre-treated wood. We did have to increase the height of the wall from the original 3 foot on the bid to 4.5 feet to accommodate the slope of our yard. Mike was very thoughtful when talking with us about the adjustment. It did not come as a surprise to us because other companies had bid a 4 foot wall so we knew it might need to be higher. We appreciated that Mike was not trying to up-sell us, but was trying to give us the best final result. We are on a tight budget for the remodeling that needed to take place and would not have agreed to the change order unless it was the best long term solution. The driveway had several concrete slabs jacked up and completely redone. The new areas look wonderful and our drainage issues have been resolved! Perfect! We have called on Schmidt Construction for other needs around the house as we have been tackling our fixer upper. I stand by my original posting that Mike is a great guy who will do right by you!

ORIGINAL POST:My husband and I really enjoyed Mike when he came over to give us the bid for our work. He was very kind, honest and had a good balance of connecting with us on a personal level while staying focused on the job at hand.  I appreciated his opinion on what needed to be replaced and what was in good current condition.  It would be easy for a contractor to try and sell a whole new driveway, but Mike gave us honest feedback on where we needed to replace concrete slabs for proper drainage, where we could use a little mud-jacking to get the slabs more level, and what was in good condition. His bid for the retaining wall came in at a fair price for the extent of the work. His bid was the first and the best one we received. Mike suggested we get several bids, talk to other contractors, and get back to him if we chose to go with his company. Good advice from a good man. We are curently awaiting to be scheduled to have the work performed.  I will update my review in a couple of weeks (late October) when the work has been completed to give feedback on the quality of work and our experience once our property is being ripped up and put back together.

"We originally contacted Angie's List because we thought we just needed a small deck railing repair. After a handful of contractors came to our house, and gave us their bed, as well as their thoughts on our deck and railing, we were then faced with our worst nightmare! It was not just our railings and that needed repairing we needed a completely new deck!...
With estimates coming in from 6 to 8 companies from here on Angie's List and private contractors and a friend from high school who owns the company in Lincoln...the estimates that were coming in were more than we could wrap our mind around.
Our last estimate to come in was from Paul with Marathon Services! .. By then we were past overwhelmed. ...and had no idea what we were going to do, let alone how we were going to pay for this repair..aka whole new deck!
Paul listened to what our situation was... (really didn't use our deck at all since we had been in our house..nearly 2 yrs)...our biggest concern was the SAFETY of our family especially that of our nearly 3 yr old son. Paul could relate as he has grandkids...and could relate to us wanting the best and safest environment!
We had a low budget...but we needed great quality! Paul told us he would help us make it happen.
Moving some things around , Paul gave us a number that was more than fair!...Better than we could believe. ..and assured us he would take great care of us...not to worry anymore! !
But of course I did....and made 2 million calls asking questions. .questioning the work of his guys.. (like I knew better..haha)...and Paul and his crew answered my questions and re assured me every time!
Being that safety was such a concern of ours...as we wanted to be able to spend much more time on our new deck...and be able to allow our son to be on the deck and not worry he was going to lean on something and fall to the ground....not feeling like we were closed in was important as well..
I started to look on the Internet at different options. ..when I found something that I thought would work..I gave Paul a call...and he was VERY OPEN to my idea...!
Our (my husband and myself) concern again was money. .budget. ..
Paul moved things around. ..exchanged things...and gave us our special personalized and very unique deck railings!
Paul really understood and agreed that this would be the best and safest for my family! ....
Half way through the project.... I asked for one more thing... A gate with a latch at the top of the stairs for one more safety measure for our son.... Paul's crew made it happen too!!!
Except for a couple of scheduling issues in the beginning.... (when we were able to meet up for the first time..Paul arrived with a pie in hand for the inconvenience of rescheduling a couple times..) .. (which seemed to be more upsetting to Paul than to us).. and a day or so of rain... (which the crew worked in part of the time)... our experience was Spectacular!
We are more than satisfied with Paul and marathon services. Paul had our best interest at hand and that is appreciated more than he may realize!
We would definitely use Marathon Services again in the future and will refer anyone we know to marathon services if the job fits!

Lined up another sub-contractor to come by and give estimate to take out wall so I could expand/add kitchen island, but neither the first person I met with nor the sub-contractor followed up with me to provide the total estimate.  I left a message a few weeks later asking for a call back and never received one.

In the end, whether they could do the work I was asking for or not, had they followed up with me, I would have considered them for my cabinet refinishing work, which I will be doing this summer.

UPDATE November 7, 2014: The owner of the co got back with me after seeing this review. He went above and beyond to address the poor follow through and put me in touch with another designer who promptly contacted me and drew up some plans. They addressed all my questions and on top of that he even reimbursed the $50 fee. I was very pleased with the recommendation, timeliness and over all effort to make it right."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Proper Murphy bed installation minimizes the risk of wall damage. A secure attachment requires making some holes for anchors or brackets, but these can be easily patched if the bed is removed. To ensure the installation is done correctly and safely, hiring a professional is recommended, especially if you have limited DIY experience.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

For maximum stability, install grab bars on wall studs, as this will adequately support the weight. However, if you don't have access to studs, you can get by with wall anchors. If opting for the latter, choose specialty hollow wall anchors.
