You can paint concrete with paint rollers. In fact, using paint rollers is considered one of the easiest ways to evenly apply paint on concrete. A paint roller with a 1/2- to 3/4-inch-thick nap—which is basically a fabric paint roller cover—is best for painting concrete. The thicker the nap, the more paint it can hold to fill those pesky concrete cracks and crevices.

Polished concrete gets its glass-like finish from several rounds of polishing, using increasingly finer grit diamond grinding pads. The concrete’s hardness will determine which grits you need to get your desired finish. The densifier and sealer also contribute to the look of the final floor, so either talk to a concrete pro (or hire one) to achieve the right concrete floor finish.

The type of paint you use on concrete influences how long it will last. Epoxy paint can last as long as 30 years and often comes with a warranty for at least 15 years. Another factor impacting the longevity of the paint is how much wear and tear the floors receive, such as heavy machinery or constant foot traffic, which can shorten the life span. 

To improve the appearance of concrete steps, you can repair any damage, refresh the surface, and add decorative elements. For crumbling, chipping, or broken sections, consider concrete resurfacing or light repair. If the surface is intact but discolored, applying a coat of paint, stain, or concrete sealer can refresh its look; reapplying a sealer every one to two years is recommended for maintenance. For a quick enhancement, you can also add decorative items like potted plants, garden statues, lanterns, or decorative railings to spruce up the area.
