"One of the best decisions I've made this year was to hire Advance Building Repairs to replace my dilapidated front steps. Salah is a master craftsman. He came to my house the same day I called and assessed the situation. One week after I contacted him I had a sturdy, attractive and comparatively inexpensive new set of front steps."

"Bernie and his team did a ton of work. Repaired my deck. Cleaned, stained and sealed the deck and fence. Stucco my foundation. Repaired some exteriors on my garage and home. Installed gutter guards and downspouts. Would hire again!"

Small jobs welcome

"Tom came over a month or so to check my installation on my exterior doors , my exterior sump pump hose discharge and then came today to check on my gutters! My doors were great and Tom fixed my sump pump discharge so that it will be easier to connect my hose to! He checked out my gutters and they were good! Tom is very knowledgeable and explains very well on problems and solutions! He is so easy to talk to and very friendly! I find him to be very honest and that is important to me! I will be calling again for my handy man projects! I also want to say Melissa is great to work with! Thank you!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

No. In most cases, it’s not colder or freezing temperatures that affect decking materials but the amount of moisture that seeps into the materials as a result. For example, wood decking material is more likely to suffer from rot or decay when exposed to excess moisture from snow or ice. An extreme change in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, but only if it’s not properly treated beforehand.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

A sunroom is worth installing on a deck, both for the value and your own enjoyment. A Florida room addition costs between $10,000 and $140,000, so it’s pretty expensive. However, a quality sunroom can offer a 50% return on investment, making your home more sellable. Plus, if it’s a space you and your family enjoy relaxing in daily for years to come, it’s worth the money, time, and effort, even without the added monetary value.
