"Absolutely Fantastic I have worked with many wonderful contractors over the years but Rick Cox (dba Carolina Carpenter) is at the top of the list. He and his son, Josh, are extremely talented, resourceful and get the job done at a reasonable cost. They and the electrician, plumber and other professionals they use are delightful to work with and of the highest honesty and integrity. In June 2018 my wife and I purchased a house in Connestee Falls, Brevard, NC which was beautifully located but in need a great deal of work. After interviewing a number of contractors, we chose Rick because of his directness, obvious competence and easy manner. The renovation required complete gutting of the core areas, including the removal of several walls and a faux stone wood-burning fireplace. Rick started while we were still in NY and when we arrived in mid-August, he had neatly removed the fireplace. In the following 11 months, he replaced it with gas burning fireplaces in the living room and adjoining Master Bedroom (a very difficult thing to do in the space we had), expanded the rear hall, closed several exterior windows, installed 4 exterior windows and sliding doors, re-floored, re-sided and painted most of the common areas, rebuilt and upgraded the stairway to the lower level and put in a fantastic new kitchen. The project cost six figures and encountered many setbacks as removal of walls and floors exposed poor electrical work and many other preexisting deficiencies. However, in each case, Rick, Josh and his associates developed creative solutions and, as we went along, they helped us refine our vision of what we wanted so that the finished product far exceeded our initial expectations. With his fine carpentry expertise, Rick provided a new beamed ceiling and log mantle and wood work around the new living room fireplace which is itself the artistic focal point of the room. He also transformed an eye-sore half wall into a beautiful built-in cabinet which is integral to the new dining area. Rick and Josh work quietly and efficiently and are upfront about timelines and their availability. In fact, when the demands of a difficult new client caused them to fall behind the timeline they set, they worked on weekends to get current. You would be fortunate to have Rick and Josh working with you. We were. They came as workmen but stayed as friends. "Brent, Keith and their entire crew were amazing to work with. They are honest, did exactly what they said they'd do, and did it on time. We went over the estimate as we had additional work done because they were so good to work with. The sub-contractors they have - plumber, electrician (installed a kitchenette in the lower level) and concrete mason (we had a window put in a 12" thick cement block wall) - all did superb work and arrived when K&B said they would as well. We will definitely have them do more work for us moving forward."

"Trevor has been an amazing contractor who has helped us through the process of installing a large interior door for an office. He has helped ensure the space was properly prepared for installation of the door. The other contractors who have assisted Trevor have also exceeded my expectations. They have been extremely detail oriented and have done everything to ensure the best outcome. I would definitely work with Trevor for any future projects."

"This multi task job needed a well qualified contractor who had a variety of skills from carpentry electricity, plumbing to tile setting to name a few. John Kent was definitely the right skilled person for this multiphase bathroom renovation project. He is knowledgeable, professional, conscientious and very well organized in performing each phase of this complete renovation. Besides planning well, he takes a lot of pride in his workmanship . He works very meticulous and is a craftsman in every project he undertakes. He undoubtedly wants his customers to be pleased with the work he does. John along with his female helper work very hard and well together. They are truly nice, pleasant, comfortable individuals to work with. They communicate well and keep the customer update about each phase. As a result we now have a new updated bathroom that we will enjoy for many years. Furthermore, we would do this whole project again especially knowing that Handy Home Helpers would be doing the job. They are the best very contractors available. Believe me you can't go wrong hiring them . We would never hesitate to hire them again or recommend them to our friends. Handy Home Helpers are the very best and you will be completely satisfied."

"John Squires is very responsive, professional, and courteous. During the week between Christmas and New Years, we needed a new contractor ASAP for a house we were about to close on and we did not hold out much hope for finding someone on short notice during the holidays. John called us back shortly after we left him a message and agreed to meet with us the next day at the property. The next day, John spent a lot of time with us going through the entire house, pointing out issues that were previously not brought to our attention. He also offered creative ideas for making the space work with careful consideration to our budget. Further, being two women, we are wary of every new male contractor as we have experienced numerous contractors and handymen to be condescending and patronizing (lots of "darlin'" and "honey" and an inability to realize that we know what we are talking about and are not inexperienced or naive about home restoration). John was the opposite, deliberating with him on the house was like talking with a close male friend that respected you and saw you as an equal. We even felt comfortable enough to share with him that we appreciated and noted his approach and manner. As mentioned before, John was very thorough in his assessment of the house and pointed out issues that others had missed. For instance, he pointed out a panel of asbestos in the second story that the person we had paid to assess the house for asbestos had missed. He also pointed out how the foundation had been compromised in a few places in the crawlspace where the current owners had begun digging out the space to convert it into a basement. Ultimately, we pulled out of the contract on the house, so we have not yet been able to work with John on construction. However, John's assessment and insights into the house partly informed our decision to back out of the deal and in hindsight know it was the right thing to do. Without John's perspective, we may have moved forward with the purchase and regretted it later. We are now looking for a different property in Asheville and will absolutely be working with John in the future."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Metal stud framing parts include the studs themselves, upper and lower tracks that act as top and bottom wall plates, various angle fasteners and clips, screws for fastening pieces togeher, metal straps, c-channel supports, and thicker steel supporting structures. Roof framing metal components include pre-fabricated trusses, heavy-gauge stud pieces, and various plates and fasteners.

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

Building involves setting foundation posts, framing with durable wood, adding roofing support, and protecting from elements with water-resistant finishes.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
