I was new to town needed small things assembled he was quick to do the work friendly and professional!
The one lady that was responsible for most of the breakage should never be allowed to pack another box, especially when she was given explicit instructions that the china in the dining room was the most valuable. She was arrogant and difficult from the outset. So was one of the drivers that resented that he was put on our job.
We did appreciate the very careful packing done by two of the ladies.
At drop-off, the men did not re-assemble the furniture.. They attempted to reassemble the antique dresser with mirrors, but could not find the screws that went with it. At that point, they took out some of their own screws (which did not fit) and tried to force them in with a power drill. The screws were not correct plus they were trying to force the screws from the wrong direction. They also attempted to set up the antique beds, but got the long screws for the antique beds all mixed up and put the wrong sizes in two of the beds, again forcing them in with a power drill. We had a terrible time getting the long screws out that went to the bed in another room. It took us days and weeks to figure out all the mess-ups and to reassemble desks, dressers, beds, etc. I did not appreciate a power drill being used on any of our antiques.
One of the oldest and nicest mahogany beds had a decorative finial that attached in its center. I noticed it missing when we stopped at the storage unit to drop off the dining room set. I questioned the big driver about it and he said very adamantly that it was not ever on the bed and that they didn't lose it. He did not attempt to look for it. Luckily we kept looking all around the truck and found it on the ground just before they drove off.
Upon arrival at our new location, the driver's had hired some very inexperienced and incompetent workers to help them unload. We had been assured that all of their crew was well-trained, but this certainly was not the case.
One was almost physically incapable, which made it difficult for him to carefully lift and carry, without scratching walls, staircases, or damaging the load.
I relate all this so that others will be spared some of the damages and frustrations.
We have moved numerous times. No move is easy or perfectly flawless, but I can say this one was the most difficult. We can not undo the damage or replace some of the antiques. We took out the extra Insurance offered and the company eventually paid our claim, although it was a very long and arduous process.

He arrived early with his crew and machinery. He is extremely personable and strives to give you exactly what you want, even if you're not quite sure what it is. He personally designed our stamped and colored, kidney \"swimming pool\" shaped patio. When the concrete arrived he supervised and worked alongside his crew to pour, spread, stamp, and personally colored the concrete. At one point we had to wait for another cement truck to arrive. He did not take this opportunity to rest, but continued to lay forms and do whatever work he could possibly do, while waiting. He works like a Man on a Mission, who has no time to waste. He is an absolute Perfectionist! My family could not have been happier with the results! That afternoon our neighbor came by and was completely stunned at the color and beauty. She even asked if they were real flagstones! Her father was with her, and he was equally impressed. My neighbor, who was so impressed, screamed, \"Daddy, I want one!\". After 6 years, not a single crack has appeared at any point in the entirety of the work. It looks just as beautiful, with the rose colored, stamped flagstones, as the day they were poured. I could not give a Higher Recommendation to any contractor I have ever worked with, including our Home builder, with whom we were very pleased. SHE AND IT ARE WELL WORTH THE VISIT.
WHEN I FIRST MOVED TO SYLVA IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, DODIE'S SHOP WAS OPEN, WHICH ISN'T TRUE OF MANY OTHER BUSINESSES IN TOWN BECAUSE OF THE COLD WINTER AND THE SEASONAL TOURISM MOSTLY OCCURRING IN SUMMER. HOWEVER, VERY FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE FROM DODIE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF WHAT i REQUIRED IN HOME FURNISHINGS AND ACCESSORIES, ALL AT ROCK BOTTOM PRICES: DISHES, GLASSES, KITCHEN ITEMS SUCH AS MASON JARS AND OTHER CONTAINERS, FUN ITEMS FOR DECORATION SUCH AS A VINTAGE CREAM CAN FORMERLY USED TO STORE CREAM SKIMMED OFF FRESH MILK, A SMALL, BEAUTIFUL RUG FOR MY BEDROOM WHICH I ACQUIRED FOR $40 AND WHICH PROBABLY SOLD NEW FOR 2 OR 3 HUNDRED DOLLARS, A TABLE LAMP OR TWO, CUSHONS, AND A NUMBER OF OTHER ITEMS WHICH HELPED TURN MY APARTMENT INTO A HOME.
AS SOON AS I WALKED INTO HER SHOP I KNEW INSTANTLY I COULD TRUST DODIE TO HELP ME FIND WHAT I NEEDED. I WAS ON A LIMITED BUDGET BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO BUY RUN-OF-THE-MILL PLASTIC OR CHEAP, MASS-PRODUCED FURNISHINGS FOR MY NEW HOME. DODIE HAS LIVED IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA FOR MANY YEARS AND IS HIGHLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE ITEMS SHE AUCTIONS OR SELLS. SHE KNOWS MOST OF THE PEOPLE SHE BUYS FROM, OR WHOSE ITEMS SHE TAKES ON CONSIGNMENT. ANOTHER PLUS IS THAT, FOR THOSE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AREA AND OTHER KINDS OF STORES, RESTAURANTS, OR EVENTS, DODIE HAS ALL THAT INFORMATION AT HER FINGERTIPS.
DODIE IS STRAIGHTFORWARD ABOUT HER MERCHANDISE AND IS ALSO A KIND, CONSIDERATE PERSON, WHO, WHEN SHE FEELS SHE CAN BE OF ASSISTANCE, WILL HELP THOSE LOOKING FOR PARTICULAR PIECES OR STYLES THEY WISH TO INCLUDE IN THIER HOMES. I VISIT FREQUENTLY AND DODIE IS VERY PATIENT WITH MY EXTENDED BROWSING AND NUMEROUS QUESTIONS. WHEN I NEED AN USUAL GIFT OR SOMETHING PARTICULAR FOR MY HOME, DODIE'S IS THE FIRST PLACE I GO. By far - and without exception the worst experience I've ever had with a company in the history of my family. Tom Chambers (the owner) lures his customers in with assurances that the project will run smoothly, and on time, as he is taking your money and getting his contracts signed. Once the...
The representative who gave me an estimate was very thorough and accurate with his projections on how many boxes would be required. He was prompt, accurate, and communicative. He assured me that the company could handle the antiques and fragile items. Unfortunately, we ended up having a...

The average cost to hire a handyman ranges from about $40 to $140 per hour. Average project cost ranges between $180 and $700, but the cost per hour and per project depends heavily on the type, size, and complexity of the project. The pro’s experience level and your location also factor into how much a handyman charges per hour or per project. You can also expect to pay higher rates or additional fees for emergency services, or around periods of high customer demand, like holidays.
Tipping a handyman is not a requirement or necessarily expected, as they should build a fair wage into the price of the job. However, some people will tip a handyman around $10 to $20 per hour or the equivalent of a day’s pay, depending on the size of the job. But it’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping a handyman service, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip, it’s encouraged and will likely be received with thanks.
There are several questions or things to know before hiring a handyman to do any work in your home.
What kind of work do they do?
Do they have proper licensing?
Do they charge for estimates?
Is the estimate for both labor and materials?
Do they provide references?
Do you provide a guarantee?
When can you start and finish the job?
Do you have any before and after photos of your work?
How long have you been doing this kind of work?
Do you clean up and dispose of waste when the job is finished?
Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.
