"Everything went really smooth. Larry & Aaron really know what they’re doing. We needed to add a GFCI receptacle and they had to cut into the exterior of our home. They also added a circuit switch for a generator hookup. This was no simple electrical work and it took some expert skill. These guys KNOW what they’re doing and will be my go to electricians in the future. HIGHLY recommend!"

"The electrician was prompt, courteous, and skillful. My only reservation was cost. However I did not try to negotiate it when the estimate was given . I provided all of the material to run a line from an attic fan and switch that I had installed, and a dedicated generator circuit breaker with an outside outlet. The cost of $485 included the permit fees. The work took a little over 2 hours."

"I hired Shock & Awe Electric to do some electrical work at my home in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. They responded quickly to my Home Advisor App request and came out to give me a quote on my project the very next day. They installed a fan light on my dock, along with adding an on off switch; they installed on my house two ring flood lights and three motion sensor flood lights which required them to move existing electrical fixtures and relocate them and lastly they re-wired a outdoor shower light and added an on/off switch. They scheduled the work when it was convenient for me, showed up on time and did excellent work. The price of the project was very fair and they cleaned up well behind themselves. I will use them again and recommend them highly. Shawn and Rick are very professional and personable guys ."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

Generators are usually sized by running watts and starting watts. Ideally, you’ll want a generator that can offer both the necessary running watts and starting watts for everything you need to power without going beyond 90% of its capacity. Calculate your home’s electrical load based on the breakers in your home or adding up the appliance and lighting needs of connected rooms.
