"I called Carolina Energy Conservation to have some new insulation put in my attic. The estimater came out within a few days of the phone call, and I received a detailed e-mail about what to expect. Matt gave me a good run down of what I needed to make my upstairs floor more comfortable. He called ahead of time, was on time, and was very professional. The estimate was for 4,000 board ft of insulation, 800 sq ft of radiant barrier installed, and an attic tent/hatch. Total cost was about $1600. They asked for a down payment of 30% up front, which I paid. Matt told me I would recieve a call to schedule the work within 1-2 business days. That never happened. After 1 week I called and spoke with Mary, who informed me their office manager who does schedules was out sick the previous week. She assured me he would call me back to setup a time for the work to be done. That never happened either. Fast forward another week. I called a 2nd time, and finally got an apointment setup for the following week. The two guys they sent to do the job were friendly and professional. After a few hours they let me inspect the work, and it was completed to my satisfaction. I normally have to set my AC to 73-74 in the summer to keep my upstairs comfortable, and the HVAC turns on quite often. Now I can set it to 76-77 and it remains comfortable, and the HVAC doesn't run as often. All in all I am happy with the overall experience, guess they just got hung up on scheduling."

"The estimator/salesperson Jeremy was excellent. On time, knowledgeable, understood the issues we had and spent a lot of time to recommend the best solution. The install crew of Shawn H and Dustin were prompt, professional and efficient. I would recommend this company and will use them again for my insulation needs."

"My family and I have been living in an RV for over a year now, due to hurricane Florence. It has been a nightmare dealing with shady, lazy and difficult tradesmen but doing business with Mitch has been the easiest thing in this whole process. I called him on a Friday to insulate my entire home and he was completely done by the following Tuesday, before lunch time. He s extremely friendly and an excellent communicator. He kept me in the loop the entire time and showed up when he said he was going to. He does quick work but he is very proficient and he actually cleaned up after himself, which seems to be completely unheard of. We called around to multiple businesses for spray insulation and Mitch is by far the BEST price you will find out there. He even gave me a really good discount because I think he s just a nice guy. I highly recommend Mitch. He will make your life easier in regards to upgrading your home."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

It’s best not to install a radiant barrier directly under insulation because it requires an air gap on at least one side to work properly. Instead, you should install the radiant barrier over your existing insulation to create an air space to reflect the radiant heat.

To cover your HVAC ducts and air vents during construction, use plastic sheets or drop cloths secured with painter's tape. Be sure to cover all supply vents on your floors and walls, as well as the larger HVAC return vent, which is typically on the ceiling. While canvas drop cloths can also be used, they may not catch all the fine dust. It is crucial to shut off your HVAC system or at least the zone where construction is happening. Running the system with vents sealed can put significant strain on the blower motor and air handler. For additional dust containment, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area from the rest of your home.

One of the disadvantages of soffit vents is they can bleed warm air from the attic during winter, resulting in slightly higher energy bills and a colder house. There are ways to mitigate this effect—mostly just closing the vent in the fall. What’s most important is your attic is ventilated to some degree in the winter.

Yes, covering exposed wires is necessary for several important reasons. Exposed electrical wires pose significant risks, such as electrical shocks, fires, short circuits, and potential damage to your home’s electrical system. By properly insulating and protecting the wires, you can minimize the potential for accidents, prevent electrical fires, and ensure your electrical system stays intact.

Radiant barriers and insulation serve different purposes, so one is not inherently better than the other. Radiant barriers reflect radiant heat, helping keep spaces cool, especially in hot climates, while insulation slows heat transfer through conduction. For optimal energy efficiency, it’s best to use both together.

Radiant barriers can enhance the performance of insulation by preventing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. The choice between them depends on specific climate conditions and the building’s design requirements.
