"Out of the 6 to 8 pros recommended Caleb was the only one to reach out and glad he did. He was able to give me a time within a 2 week window, arrived on time and did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him for your project."

"Ben Beam and his crew which was Clint came one day after calling. Our water line was clogged from the city line and a new PRV valve needed to be excavated , found and replaced . Ben and Clint found the problem , pit in the new valve after digging 6 feet into the area., and was right on the money. Our pressure was restored immediately. He is honest , knows exactly how to solve the problem , and is cost conservative ! He earns the 5 star rating !! I recommend him without reservation !"

"Elevated Construction is a pleasure to work with. They built an amazing boulder wall and driveway that should last forever. AJ is a wizard on the excavator and the finished product shows. He had some challenges with the slope of our yard but it turned out great. I would highly recommend this friendly conscientious crew."

Customers say: Quality work

"The best grading WNC has to offer. After contacting numerous contractors, we never received a solid plan/price until we contacted Sam and his crew. These guys are the real deal and will stand by their work 1000%. They will not leave you high and dry like many other graders in the Leicester, NC area."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

In the United States, a depth of 36 inches (three feet) for underground water lines is the accepted industry standard. This depth varies from location to location based on local conditions. In areas with colder winters, they may be buried deeper to prevent frozen well water pipes : This is usually at least six inches below the frost level. The International Plumbing Code calls for a minimum of 12 inches below grade.

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

Slab foundations are more affordable than crawl spaces because they require minimal excavation, as the slab sits directly on the ground or on footers that only sink a few feet into the ground. Crawl spaces require excavation of the entire footprint of the home to several feet below the surface. Not only does that mean higher labor costs, but more materials are necessary for the concrete foundation walls.

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.
